Can any hanging shop heater be changed from natural gas to propane. Looking to buy a used heater and can,t find a propane one in good shape.

Thanks for any info

the older Dearborn units can be changed pretty easy...change jet and adjust intake air flow...your local propane dealer should have parts or be able to get them.

If the heater is still supported by the manufacturer there is probably a propane conversion kit for it. Basicly it is a rod and spring to hold the regulator wide open and the correct size orifices for the burner.
Find out the Mfg, model number, BTU rating of the burner and serial number and give them a call.

50 years ago you could buy orifices to change ranges, hot water heaters, furnaces, space heaters from LP to natural gas or vice verser at many places. In fact many came with 2 sets so you could go either way Gov has got pittling and changed that. 3 or 4 years I got a space heater to use in my shop that was propane. I wanted to use natural gas but couldn't find anyone who would sell orifice. I Googled and found out what size to drill out the natural orifice for propane. You might try Google, it's your friend.

A heating contractor should be able to change it over, or a propane dealer, change of regulator and a new orifice (or drill out a new one.) Should be a fairly easy changeover. Some regulators are dual pressure. Take the top cover off, there's a plug underneath, reverse plug and it's propane. Check to see if that's yours.
