Mystery oil leak

While putting on the chains and backblade today, I found oil leaking/oozing from a hole about 1/4" to 5/16" in diameter. The hole is below the coil maybe 1 inch in front of the oil dipstick. I shot some carb cleaner in and tried to look into the hole. I looks like there are a couple of threads showing, but the tube from the cleaner will only go into the hole about 1/4". Does anyone know if there is supposed to be a bolt there? Or if this has happened to anyone else? I can post a picture tomorrow.
Thanks, Warren

What do you mean "converted to a 5 speed manual?"
A 851 OR 861 has a 5 speed trans from the factory. 801 is just a number series there were several, such as.... 801, 821, 831, 841, 851, 861, 871, 881. The middle number designated what it was equipted with from the factory as far as transmission and pto options. Example: The 851 and 861 shared the 5 speed trans, BUT the 851 did NOT have live pto, where as the 861 DID! That was the only difference between the 2 tractors.

That motor is used on industrial like compresers and etc . I have three of those engins and all have the hole in them ,mine leaked , I put a pipe plug in them. It has very little pressure so don't know maybe a return galley. one of mine had a cork in it.

If we are talking about the same thing. Been there. It is hole left to drill oil passage in engine. Factory is a plug and then like a freeze plug. Both available for much money. It just goes into crankcase, so plug it any way you can.

Probably NH part #EAF66045A, which, IIRC is a rubber plug.

COULD be NH part #EAF66025A, which, IIRC is a steel (press-fit?) plug.

Thanks for the comments I took 3 pix this morning and posted them at http://www.flickr.com/photos/56434835@N03/

Thanks for the help,

Hi Lumpy,

When I bought this tractor it had a dying select-o-speed. Over the next 2 years it finally completed the process. No one around here would/knew how to fix it and many people said it was better off dead. Found a New Holland dealer who offered to replace the trans with a 5 speed, so that's the way we went. So I said it was "converted" to an 861 as I understand it.
