An Old Picture

Here's a picture of my late dad's graduating class picture from college in 1912. He's in the bottom row and he's in the third picture from the right. The Winona college was in Indiana. He wanted to be a vet, but my granddad talked him out of it. Hal

How neat! I love family history/photos.

My dad grew up very poor, (The Great Depression), but they were a proud family. Having ideas of becoming a doctor he took college prep classes in high school, including two years of French and of Latin.

As things went he ended up attending a county normal teacher college, graduating in '37 or '38. But what he really wanted to do was dairy farm.

After helping his parents pay off their heavily mortgaged farm he saved money like a hound and nearly paid cash for his own farm when he was 29 years old. He and Mom married in '49 and had us four boys beginning in '51.

In 1970 we were "forced" into selling the family farm, but Dad quickly bought another one and at age 58 he and my oldest brother farmed together for the next 30+ years.

I only hope I'm made of at least a little of the stuff Dad's made of. At nearly 94 years, his race is nearly run, but what a life of honor!

El Toro, thank you for posting that picture. I hope I didn't hi-jack your thread. Sentimental...

In 1962 my dad received an invitation for his 50th class reunion. I don't know how they even found him back then. Anyway he said he wasn't attending since he wasn't a millionaire and I told him you probably have something a lot of your classmates don't have and he wanted to what that was and I told him you're still living. He still didn't attend and he died in 1970. Hal

Hal... you should read a book by Don Kurtz called "South of the Big Four".. it's a fictional story about a farmer and his hired help up in NE Indiana and mentions Winona as well as several other places in the region. Really good "farmer" read, if you don't mind a slight touch of language and womanizing... ha
