Family Cookout

We had a family cook out last weekend at the old homeplace. We had deer stew, fried rabbit, deer steaks, barbecue, pinto beans, lima beans, cornbread all cooked over open fires in black pots. Also had pies, biscuits, and a lot of other eats. There were about 35 brothers, sisters and cousins there. Pinto beans and ham hocks in the iron pot. Cornbread in the dutch oven. Eat too much. DH

that looks great! where did you get the iron pot., I would like to get one ,we were cooking over an open fire last weekend, That cornbread really looks good!!

Google "Lodge Cast Iron", Larry. They've got a good selection of dutch ovens and camp ovens. Order online, or if you're fortunate, from your local hardware store.
I just re-seasoned mine this week. Justabout everything tasts better cooked over an open fire!

Hey Larry Ebay has a lot of iron pots but some people want three prices for them. There is still some to be found around here that are good buys. If I can find a old rusty one cheap I buy it and use electrolics with washing soda to clean it. Lodge has dutch ovens and skillets but I don't think they have pots. I will try to locate you one. DH

I have about a dozen old Griswald iron skillets. They are so much better than the "new stuff." The casting is finer. You can still find kettles and pots at flea markets/auctions/garage sales. Ebay is a bit high. My Aunt Rose used a cast iron skillet for over 80 years. She told me, "Take care of your skillets and they will last longer than you will."
