sickle bar mower

I'm looking to buy a sickle bar mower for my 8N.
I resently bought some property with 'small finger-size'bamboo.Can anybody tell me if I'm wasting my time or that this idea will work???

I don't know about bamboo, but my old McCormick 27V goes thru giant ragweed like nothing is there. I suspect you'd be fine. Fine grasses like bluegrass or ladino clover seem to be the hardest to cut.

Once I got too close to the hedgerow and cut a couple of broom handle sized maple saplings with the tip of the bar. Chopped them off like they weren't there. I wouldn't do that regularly but I think bamboo should be pretty easy with all of that air in the stalk.

I would think that "finger sized bamboo" wouldn't be much tougher than mature johnson grass, although I have never cut any bamboo. Most sickles will cut whatever will fit between the guards if you don't get froggy and let it slowly eat. I don't recommend treating a sickle mower like that, although I admit having cut an occasional sprout with mine. You can expect a bent section from cutting sprouty material, but sometimes you will get lucky.

I think it will cut the stuff OK, but the Ns are pretty fast in first gear- maybe too fast? Would be good if you could borrow one first, to see if you can go slow enough for a good cut.

The other question is, why are you cutting it? If the idea is to kill it, it won't work- cutting will just encourage it. Roundup would be a better idea.
