I have a 1975 Ford 5000 diesel and am looking to buy a transport disc.
What size would be best for this tractor ?
I would be discing in old pastures in soils that vary from sandy to light clay. thanks

In this area most farmers used a 12' or 13' wide disc on a tractor that size and there were many Ford 5000 here. Not only did that width cover the marks from the dual tires on the tractor but it was a good match to the tractor power. I think in the midwest farmers could pull a wider disc maybe 14'.

Id say it will handle a 12 foot fine but if a good deal happened by of only a 10 or 11 foot I wouldnt be ashamed to drag it throught the field in a higher gear (not so fast to leave ridges though). Of course, the type of soil and depth and blade condition and weight are all factors. Its also a traction question, a set of duals and a 12 foot would do a good job mmmmmmm mmmmmm. I liked using those smaller size of outrigger blades on the outside rears and the shovel in the middle to even out the field and if one drug a harrow of some sort behind the disk now that reallyyyyyyyyyy made for a pretty job of disking.......

I miss farming at times but I get by

You might see what the neighbors are pulling with that size tractor; I'm always amazed at what is considered appropriate in different areas of the country/world. Around 'here', a 5000 was a good match for a 10 1/2 ft disk..........back when folks were disking with a 5000.

A 12 foot or tad bigger will work fine in fall disking up cornstalks on firm ground.

a 12 foot or smaller will pull pretty tough in spring loose damp plowed ground, traction will be harder to find without duals on a 'small' 5000.

I have a 5200, the bigger engine, taller tractor with bigger rear tires of the 5000 series, and pulled my folding 20 foot JD disk with it. I left the wings up, which made for a heavy disk of about 12 feet. Worked good in the silage corn stalks, but would be a handful in spring ground.

10 foot would probably be 'right', 12 foot should work.

Can always drive faster if the disk is a little small; can't do much if the disk is too big for the conditions....
