3000 ford diesel

My 1968 Ford 3000 diesel sounds like the starter is dragging, turns over very slow and sounds terrible, I thought the starter was bad, took it off & it works good on the bench, has a new selenoid, any suggestions what would make it grind like the starter was locked up? The key switch has to be tried a few times before it will engage. Could that be my problem?

sounds like battery/cable/connection problems to me. Probably not getting enough juice when on the tractor. I'd clean all the connections real well. How's the battery? Charged? New?

Check that the ground stud on the end of the starter is tight in the brush holder. Tighten the jamb nut if necessary. Same with the pos stud on the solenoid. Clean them. Clean the cable connections. If you have the clamp on cable ends... get rid of them and SOLDER on NEW crimp style ends... provided that the cables are good and don't seem to have broken strands. You also want to make sure that you have a minimum of 2/0 cables and the proper 4DLT battery doesn't hurt, particularly if it's cold....
If that doesn't solve the problem then the humble Lucas probably needs a new set of brushes and a new end bushing. Pretty basic maintenance on those things... and it's good to go for another 3000 hours. Just because it spins up fine on the bench doesn't mean the brushes are good...
