OT- Going soft

Well go ahead and laugh, but it has happened, I have gone soft hearted, soft headed or both. My house is in an opening in a heavy wooded area. Each morning and again each evening about dusk I have as few as 5 and at most 8 white tail that come to visit. They come within 100 feet of the house and at times get within 30 to 40 feet. Now that says to some......" MEAT ".....but when they just stand there and look at you with them big brown eyes, wiggle those ears, what can I say I just don't feel right. So they go about there business while I eat corn flakes and think about how soft I have become. By the way my father in law who lives with us hunted all his life, has bagged many, many deer, also can't bring himself to do it.

I haven't hunted for 20 years (been over here). But see deer daily when checking the horses. They usually don't even look up when I drive by. Let one of the hunters drive along though and they are gone. Have had them eating and using the salt licks with the horses and just hanging out in the pasture with them. We have plenty of wild boar in the area but you only see them when they are hungry.

Was an avid hunter in my younger days but as I got older I just don't enjoy killing things. I guess that I've just seen too much suffering in my 75 years to enjoy killing things.

i havent hunted in over 25 years or so...my dad enjoyed it and as he got older i wound up cleanin his kill so to me it's just more work...we ate so much venison when i was a kid i cant hardly stand the taste of it anymore unless its in 50/50 smoked sausage with pork.
i saw a 14 pointer the other day that almost made me go buy a license tho.

I'm 67, started hunting when I was 16---but--I know exactly where you are coming from. Same situation here-they come out of the woods and hang around the back yard. They even bed down during the day at the upper edge of the lawn near the hedge.

When I got up one morning a couple of years ago, I looked out the front window and there was a nice buck bedded down on the lawn just off the front steps.

So-you aren't alone in what you posted.

We have several hang around here, seems they like to have a staring contest with the cats! They'll get almost nose to nose. Don't seem to be afraid of each other. Don't seem to bother the garden much but play heck on the wife's flowers (he!he!) But they sure are pretty to watch. Mike

A friend loses his garden to deer every year. There are 4000 deer auto accidents every year here.PA runs over 100000.More deer should be shot and eaten.

Ive never done much deer hunting but think old age and laziness figures into it.A fellow who got attacked by a buck deer make think different. My legs aint what they used to be but if a deer can be shot where my tractor can go Ill have one.
