Yet another Computer Question

Okay, I'm getting ready to copy a TON of files (raw Data like Word Docs and Pictures and Favorites and Contacts etc, NOT programs) from my Desktop (Vista) over to my new Laptop (7) and lookin for the fastest way. This is wayyyyyyyy more then I want to use my 8GB thumb drives or CD's or DVD's etc.

In the past Ive hooked up my trusty USB to USB Belken Transfer cable and that worked but the question is CAN I SET UP A "HOME NETWORK" AND COPY THEM OVER USING MY ROUTER???????????

Not sure if Im smart enough to do this "Home Newtork" thing or not. I have a Wireles router with a hard wired LAN to my desktop and, of course, the wireless signal to feed the laptop in the house.

Sooooooooo can that system be used to make my desktop talk to my laptop to transfer data from one to the other ?????????????????????????????

Thay have Software like EZ Transfer for Dummies etc to do this but I think Windows has its own Transfer program built in for copy from old to new, Im just lookin for the FASTEST AND EASIEST

Lay some knowledge on me pleaseeeeeeeeee especially regarding "Home Network" how to if it will even do this???

if all the computers can now access the network it should be no problem.
the thing you will have to do is of the files are in my pictures, video and documents you will have to go to my computer and select the appropiate directory (folder) and right click and select share. do that for all directories and you should nbe able to see them from the other computer via network then just copy and paste them where you want to put them.
tho it is not faster, just easier.

Once you"ve shared the subdirectories like Jack said, you should be able to just type in desktoppcname in the "search" box in Windows 7 and it come up, where desktoppcname is the NETBIOS name of your PC.

You might also be able to see it and/or browse to it in network neighborhood, but there are a ton of things that can affect that, like are firewalls turned on, are both PCs in the same workgroup, is browsing service on, what type of router you have, etc, etc...

If it is easier, you can also share a folder on your laptop, find it on the network from your desktop, and "push" your files across to the new laptop...

The network will almost certainly be a lot faster (assuming 100Mb router/switch) than USB.

Dear John,
My suggestion is different, and in line with good insurance.
In front of me on my desktop is a thin calculator sized hard drive. Mine is a Seagate Free Agent, but the brand is not important. It is 1/2 terabyte (500gigabyte). It is plug and play as a USB device and can be used on more than one machine as an external HDD. It also is equipped with auto backup routines that keep your entire file structure (not programs) backed up without personal intervention once it is setup to schedule the backup. (very easy menu driven process)
I have them on two computers, and have used them to restore computers that have failed, as well as backups to my Photo archives.
They are less than 75 Bucks. What a deal.

Yep and you can pic up a 320GB for $50. Actually, all my critical data I already have in 3 places. My Desktop,,,,,,,My Laptop,,,,,,,,My I Pod, but am considering an external USB HD as you mentioned I will keep at a different location for even more safety.

Hey John T - Do as Jim N recommends and get an external HD!

Copy your data from your desktop PC to the HD, then copy THAT to your new PC. When complete store the external HD offsite somewhere (mine stays in my son in law's gun safe)

Incidentally got a 1 gig external HD for $90 at Staples - money well spent AFIAK!

Yup - I meant a 1 TERABYTE HD. (Sometimes my fingers and brain wind up on different pages when I type stuff!)
