I'm looking for springs for solid one piece overhead garage door. This garage door is very old, no idea of make and one of the springs broke. I need to find a source where I can purchase a set of replacement springs based on the length, diameter and size of wire the spring was made from. Thanks in advance

Call a garage door repair place......It is money well spent. 4 years ago the torsional spring on my sectional door broke. The guy charged me $175 for parts and labor. I wasnt going to do it. I dont even know where to buy the spring and hardware.

Forgot to mention, no garage door place in my town has a source for this antique door. BTW, many of then have gone out of business because of the down turn. I need to repair this door because of the low head room in the 60 year old block garage.

I need an online source that sells springs by size, length and diameter.

Yes, I see.

Go To Mcmaster.com MCmaster is a super large have everything warehouse/hardware store.

If Mcmaster doesnt have it then Search for SPEC spring catalog.

If all else fails then, get a new swing open barn like door.

Tenant wants door to open with a lazy button. Need to repair what I have or build a new garage!

This happened to me many years ago. I was able to buy one spring and replace it. Wherever you get the spring from make sure you get installation instructions. Putting the right tension on the springs is tricky and you can hurt yourself if your not careful. My door opener is a Stanley and you need two 1/2" round rods about 12" long to turn the shaft the springs are attached to.

I was a garage door installer for about a year and to get the correct spring you need the weight and size door just buying one that looks the same will not work unless you get lucky those springs can hurt you real bad (had a couple close calls and I had all the proper tools) one guy had a spring break and caused him to slice his arm badly. Whatever you do respect the springs

Agree fully that yu need to be careful with springs.
Remember reading years ago about a man who died because he did not realize what a torsion spring was - he took the wrong bolt out, was the last thing he ever did

There has to be a door installer and sales somewhere in your area go to them sounds like you need the single spring extension on one side ythey cant be that hard to get.

If you have a Lowe's or Home Depot near you they will have springs. They have springs with different weight ratings. Try to figure how much the door weighs. Rick

Thanks for your reply. Looks like if anyone has the springs I need McMaster will have it.

Thanks for everyone's input. I have installed many garage doors in my time but never installed a piece door. The spring I need is about 3 inches in diammeter, 20 coils, and about 1 ft long. NO ONE, LOWES, HOME DEPOT, MENARDS, or the overhead door companies in my town have seen anything like this antique. Even online, the one piece doors use a longer spring like ones used on convential doors.

I plan to measure the specs of this spring by attaching a weight to the one good spring I have left and measure the distance the spring stretches. Then I will attempt to buy a set of springs closest to the diameter, coils, length and the K constant, which is determined by the force applied to the spring divided by the distance the spring stretches.

Thanks again to all.

I had some made by them a few years back. If they don't have one, they can make one for you to you specs.

If the hook on the end of the spring is broken I heat the end coil red and pull it out to form a new hook.Cattle trucks use big coil springs to help pull the tail gate up.I traded a pair for a bull calf years ago.
