PTO Shaft problem Please advise

I have a Massey Ferguson 165 powering a 5ft brush hog which I lubricated the two universal joints but forgot to lub the splined adjustable length shaft. I CAN NOT get the shaft to move back and forth to be able to use it. I do not wish to force the shaft apart in fear of damaging the needle bearings in the U joints. ANY SUGGESTION appreciated. Thanks and god bless our veterans.

Well if you can remove the whole shaft then which ever end slides in fill it with ATF and let it sit a few days. Then after a few days tap on it so it goes closed more or open more that should free it up

I used two chains stretched between two oak trees and a come-a-long. I alternated heat and tapping. It finally came loose. It had not been used in 15 years and should have been tossed, but I have more time than money...

If it's not totally collapsed, you have some hope.

Take it off - the other end too - and put some penetrating oil on it. Let it soak.

Then whack on it. A lot. To collapse it. Once it moves, it will be good.

It's possible it got twisted, and will never be useable.

If it's collapsed all the way short, you have problems. Very hard to pull them apart. You can whack on it & hope it will collapse a tiny bit & come free, but it's a trouble. Cut the shield off & heat it, see if that works, then buy a new shield.

When you do get it apart, never never leave it together pull it apart then you will never have any more trouble. Thats the problem with metric PTO shafts. The old square ones were better. Vic

take it off the tractor and see if you can run some lubricant down it, like diesel, give time to penetrate, then put a block of wood on it and hit with a good heavy hammer, both ways,
