Every few years, seems like I'm rebuilding another one of these darned office machines.

Don't really know what happened, but two or three weeks ago, woke to this one being dead one morning, so ran into town and bought one of those cheap little Dells to get by until the parts arrived for this one.

Evidence of an electrical short inside the case beside the power supply. Whatever caused it took out the supply and the motherboard.

Replaced both those items along with the processor for good meausure and upgraded the memory. Also bought a backup external drive while I was at it. :>(

Anyway, she's up and going again. Hardest part was getting by microsoft to acknowledge that new motherboard ID. :>)

Of my 110 HP computers, (3 to 4 years old) 4 or so go feet up each semester. They are used like a sidewalk in NYC. Jim

That's the way these are. We just work the livin' snot out of 'em. :>)

I get busy with my tractors and the farm and don't clean 'em as regularly I should.

Think that's why this ol' Mama failed. She probably got hot and cooked ‘erself.

My Dell GX620 s that I bought "off of lease" are business machines (not home)and have run non stop for over a year now. Variable speed fans seem to help. First computers I have owned that were fool proof for me.
 
Years ago I worked for a company that had many rural CATV operations with all the equipment in the headends, we kept it very cold AC running 24/7 365 eliminated 95% of the troubles.
 
Hey Allan;

Just had my computer upgraded, needed a new video card that would
run two monitors, at the same time one of my memory cards went on the
fritz. So the guy who did the work also had to install a bigger power supply.
according to him the factory installed power supply was poor from the start.
The overhauled unit runs much better, quiter and much cooler. With my old
power supply I could heat my computer room with the computer alone. Much better now.

We tend to get ANGRY at Things We do not Understand..Allan . I feel Your Pain !!!.... How come American Tractors built 60 years ago Will Work just like they did When new, Even If they Did NOT have proper care,, And You can Baby the delicate workings of a 50 Year old Combine to bring in a crop for the 50th Harvest , a 59 'Dodge , 72' Ford or a 69 Chevy will just keep being a Loyal truck with Proper care ,,.. BUT A COMPUTER !!!!!!!!,,,... DAmthemodernb/s!!!!,...if you get 5 yrs out of one you are doing good ,, SEEMS to Me the riceheads and Ragheads that build these things put a selfdistruct / aggravator in each one they set on the WALMART shelves.....
 
Way out there where you are you might want to think of a line conditioner. This pervent low power problems and delivers a constant 120. You know power plants can make bad power.
