Goose, I was in on some of that stuff you mentioned about and we pulled that ship right up in front of their army headquarters all sand bagged up with artillary holes in some of the buildings....and there was a big 'ol Ro-Ho rooster crowing on the steps leading to hqtrs. My thoughts were "this ought to be a dandy" cause we bought them a couple of landing craft in the well deck of our LSD....and the scuttlebut was that they were gonna attack the mainland with them. Does it sound like I was in your neck of the woods? Steaming 4 on 4 off about 1960??? Anyway, happy Veteran's Day to all. ohfred

16th Signal Ft Hood, 97th Signal Mannhiem Germany. I never saw combat anywhere.

Today something happened that upset me some. It wasn't here that it happened. It happened elsewhere. A person posted thanking the veterans of certain wars, leaving out a lot of wars and conflicts. I replied nicely I thought, adding some conflicts and wars that were not mentioned, including our current ones, as well as thanking the soldiers that served that didn't see combat anywhere any time, but they served nonetheless and could have been called upon for the ultimates. I was trying nicely to thank all veterans across the board, because as Patton said during his speech just prior to Operation Overlord, there is no soldier whose job is to small...and you get the idea. That person came back and took a swipe at me, naming our current wars, and named one prior as being unjust, and blah, blah, blah, and made it clear that he or she left them out for those reasons. That really took some shine off of it all. That really and truly did. Our nation has changed some over the years.

To all veterans everywhere, thank you so very much. I can never thank any one of you or be proud of anyone of you or our soldiers that sacrafised it all from our Revolutionary war after declaring independence up to and including now...enough. Thanks, thanks, and thanks.

May God always bless our nation and our soldiers, every last one of them.

Mark
I cant think of a more powerful speech ever...Patton

I was on the Sara for a couple of months in 1956 while the ship itself was still in shakedown.

We did carrier quals as part of the shakedown. January, 1957 we deployed to the Suez area on the Lake Champlain, CVA 39. The "Champ" no longer exists. It's been recycled.

Sounds like Taiwan. I was in a Marine jet fighter squadron on a Nationalist Chinese Air Force Base by PingTung from August, 1958 to April, 1959.

Red China began saturation bombing and shelling the Quemoy and Matsu Islands in the Strait on August 23, 1959. Nationalist Chinese F-86's were actively engaging Red Chinese MIG-17's at the time, while we had their backs. Two Marine officers and 5 Marine techs jerry rigged a couple dozen Nationalist F-86's to carry Sidewinder heat seeking missiles. At this point, Red China had no idea air to air missiles even existed.

When the Nationalist F-86's began picking off the Red Chinese MIG's at will from a safe distance, things wound down in a hurry.

Big Red One 2nd and 16th Jan 1, 1970 till the colors came home, then 360 tran line haul fuel till March 1971.

My respect for all vets doing what they though was right for their country. May the good Lord forgive me for what I may have done wrong, and perhaps we can avoid wars in the future.

I must ask if we all think what we did was right now that we have had lots of time to think it over. I have a very uneasy feeling myself, and certianly loose alot of sleep because of it.

I was at Beacat,Jan-July 68.Dong Tam, Aug to October 68, I too, kissed the ground when I got to the World. Just wanted to let you know Sniper Alley was alive & doing well when I left Dong Tam. The little people blew the ammo dump after I left.

Hump , thought we had that cleaned out. See what happens when ya up and leave the riff raff move back in . Ya should have been there for the holidays in 68. Thought for sure we were going to have to DEE DEE . The night that Tet started my buddy's hooch took the first rocket and he and i had just left it and were about fifty yard from it when it went in to fire wood.I still have the nightmares from the next two and a half months after Tet.

Hi Iowa: We probably haven't had a right war since WWII. But we don't make those decisions. We just serve our country, right or wrong. Serving the country is always right. And we don't get to pick our orders. We just go where they tell us to go. I asked to go to Vietnam but they were filling up the airborne at the time for their usarstrike units. Don't lose anymore sleep except to pass along your wealth of knowledge to this board.

By the way, we hired an outfit to put vinyl siding on the farm house. They start late next week. Continental. One of the biggest and supposedly best around with their seamless siding they make in Missouri. I asked if they put on J channel diverters. He asked what they were. I told him and he said they don't need them. I said I'd be there to put them on myself anyway when they get up to the windows. Probably wrap the whole window with that 6" sticky tape from home cheapo. He was proud of their blocks for every light and so on. Told him I had the same problem with them as the windows as rain can run down the sides and then under the bottom row of siding. He didn't believe it was a problem. Guess I'll wrap those as well except most are on the bottom row.

No regrets then, No regrets now. Just doing what I thought was right. Would do it all again if necessary.
