Focus mechanical question

My daughter has a 2007 Focus; she lives 300 miles from me. In the last two days the car is starting to idle fast like 2500 and up to 3500. It will do this at start up and also not idle down when she comes to a stop. Does this car have a throttle return spring, or could it be sticky throttle butterfly? Or could it be something else, anyone has any suggestions.

While she was here this weekend we took of the air cleaner to be able to get to the turn signal bulb that was blown. At the bottom of the air cleaner was a hose nipple that did not have a hose on it. I looked to see if I could find a hose to connect to the nipple and could not see one. Think that could be it?
Thanks for any help or suggestions on this.

Is it throwing any "check engine" lites?
If you have a friend with a engine computer analyzer, would be a good idea to check it out. If there's a hose off, it could lead to an air leak, and cause any number of problems.

I think that year is a drive by wire throttle, no mechanical linkage. may have a vacuum leak. It may also have the 5 year drive train warranty, and the air pollution equipment is 5 years or 50k miles, it may be under warranty

Could have many causes. Should light up the check engine light on the dash. A defective idle air control valve will cause the condition you describe.

Definitely should be throwing codes...

If it's not still under warranty, most auto parts places that also do tires/repairs/etc. will read the codes for free (hoping to sell you parts) - have your daughter take it to one of those places get the code(s) and report back...

Yep,

That's a classic vacuum leak symptom.

Really doubt if it is gonna throw any codes or check engine light because the system is doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Exhaust sensors see a lean mixture and the processor throws more fuel at the fire to compensate.

Result is a higher than normal curb idle rpm.

Have her run it by an "honest" dealer and they can probably have that repaired before she can make her way to the customer waiting lounge.

2500-3500 rpm with the throttle closed will be seen as an error, that's way past a fast idle. To dump enough fuel to cause that rpm when the throttle is at idle will definitely flag some sensor values as out of range - it'll be throwing lean codes at least. The only way that wouldn't throw codes if it's some sort of mechanical problem, or problem with the pedal/throttle sensor, i.e. the computer thinks someone is telling it to run that fast.

PCV elbows get mushy and suck air on these. The only thing that stinks is that ya have to buy a line/hose assy as a replacement.Ford dealer only.
