Early or side console? Gas, LP or diesel? Hobby use, secondary tractor or prime motive power to make your living?

I would rather have a power shift. My reason is if you intend to use the PTO a lot, the sycro shift has a throwout bearing that runs when the PTO is engaged. 4020's are neat but you can buy a 4230 or a 4040 just as cheap and they are better, and you can even get a good cab.

Either is pretty much bullet-proof. Never had a 4020 with power-shift, though I had 40 series with it. Personally don't care for the 8-speed power shift. We ran Deeres almost exclusively since a 3010D bought in 1963; some of 'em had 15,000-plus hours. We replaced a couple of rear ends (4620 & 4840), but never had a transmission apart on the 18-20 of 'em we owned.

There is no "better" or "worse." All depends on what you want. Gear drive(even when engine isnt't running) or a trans that relies on hydraulic pressure on clutch-disks.

Powershift robs a little engine power and fuel efficiency - but only by a little. Powershift uses an extra 5-7 horsepower just to power itself.
So, the injection-pump has to be turned up to make up for that. As a result the PS models gets a little worse efficiency.

Main thing is - if you have trans-problems, a Powershift is going go be extremely expensive to repair. SynchroRange is usually much more forgiving.

When I'm on a big Deere, coming down a steep hill, I like knowing that if the engine dies, I've got a transmission gear to hold me back. With SyncrhoRange, you've got that. With Powershift, you don't. Neither is likely to have any brakes or steering with a dead engine. So, having a gear-trans is nice to have in that kind of situation.

Drive both kinds before you buy- world of difference in shifting and convenience. PS likely to last longer, but more expensive to repair. Have a qualified tech do the pressure checks on a PS to test condition. I"ve driven synchro- would never buy one. The five PS I have/had have provided good service. One over 11000 hrs, several had 8-10.

I have a 67 4020 diesel with syncro. its got 11000 hrs on it. I love it. Sometimes I wish I had a ps but most of the time Im glad i dont when I have to go from forward to reverse much. If your gonna have a loader my opinion is syncro definately. You can drop from 2nd to reverse with a push of the clutch and a throw down of the hand were with a ps you have to drop down from your forward gears and the slide over and up to go to reverse. We had 3 4020s on greatgrandpas farm. 2syncro and one ps all were 69 models and bought at the same time. We only used our ps to plant with and bail. Another down fall on a ps is that if you break a hyd hose and loose much oil ur tractor wont go and your stuck wear it sits and your walkin from all the way at the back of the field to your pick up to get the stuff you need to fix it. Both are good as far as durability I just favore my syncro for what I do with mine. Either way 4020 is a good tractor and you wont be disappointed with it.

Another thing to think about is if you are going to be using the hydraulics while holding the clutch down, IE. loader or feeder wagon. The syncro range will lose hydraulic flow as the charge pump stops when the clutch is down. The power shift"s charge pump runs all of the time even with the "inching" pedal down. Also you do not have a clutch to keep up if it is used on a loader.

Are you going to have many operators on it??? My wife can never figure out the gears on the syncro range tractor. So she just grinds until she is going the direction she wants. She usually will look for the powershift to drive.

I like my powershift. You will need to keep the transmission disconnect working for cold weather starts. They will not hardly crank if it is real cold without using it.
