HOW TO ADVICE REQUEST

I bought a Danuser, 3 point, posthole digger at auction, with a 12” auger. The original gear box had been replaced with a light truck differential, before the previous owner got it. He used it a lot before the spider gears came loose and disabled it. A local shop welded them, no charge, no guarantee, they questioned that it would hold. The weld came loose after digging three holes. I am seeking advice on what on a worth while fix attempt.

I've got a perfectly good heavy duty Danhauser gear box but the freight would probably make it cost prohibitive. For me, the answer was to just get a totally new unit, they arent that expensive compared to the time, trouble, and aggervation of keeping up an old one.

The gears are HARD and brittle, so the weld breaks off. Try welding a "block" to each spider gear that wedges between the teeth so the weld doesn't have to carry all the load.

If you can figure out what axle it is, you can get a "spool" for it to eliminate the spider gears completely.

Might be able to pick up a used one pretty cheap, ebay, for example.

I agree with the Kyhayman . Anything short of getting a Danhauser gear box and you just have a junkyard dog that will let you down .

the way to fix the gear box is to put a short axle in the top end and make a plate to cover the end of the housing with the shortened axle goung through the plate. This holds the axle that is on the top and the lower axle with the auger can turn.
