To hoard or not to hoard

Geez,I don't know what to do. I bought a pair of 11x40 Wards Riverside tires on Oliver rims this past summer and just got around to putting them on my 70. One of my old tires was junk, but I've got a decent 11x40 Good Year off of it. Been thinking I should sell it,but everytime I get rid of something,I find a use for it. It doesn't match the Wards tires at all,so I'd hate to use it on that tractor again if one of those went bad. In fact,I've threatened to shove this thing off a cliff if one of these thire go bad as hard as 40s are to find. On the other hand,as soon as I get rid of this tire, sure as you're born I'll find another tractor for a little bit of nothing that only needs a 40 inch tire.

What to do.....what to do....

Don't keep common stuff around on the idea that you "might" need it sometime- chances are you won't, and you can always buy it again if needed.

Rare stuff, on the other hand, is worth keeping. Even if you don't need it, it will be worth something at your estate sale. Be sure you tag is with an explanation of what it is, that its worth some money to someone, and advice on how to sell it.

(quoted from post at 12:18:16 11/06/10) What to do.....what to do....

You must first get one thought in your mind and cleanse yourself of all other thoughts Grasshopper. Only then will you have discovered the secret to inner peace.......

it is better to have and not need than to need and not have......

The trick is knowing where you put it when you need it sometime.

I already did that. I rolled it into the shed right next to one of the original 11x38s off of my Oliver 77 and a 15.5x38 that I took off of a 1600 parts tractor that I bought this spring.

Yep,don't I know it. I bought a pair of used 600x16 triple rib tractor fronts cheap at the neighbors auction in 1987. They sat around here for several years til a friend borrowed a tractor from somebody. The front tires were bad and one blew out on him. He wanted that pair to put on it before he took it back,so I sold them to him for just what I paid. Didn't know when I'd ever use them. Shoot,I've needed'em half a dozen times since.

Offer it for sale and be open to offers... Someone may want (need) that tire very badly.. Maybe trade for something that you would enjoy..

Sure don't have to "give" it away if the offers are lowball...

I've bought several nice chest freezers at auctions for very good prices. My wife would run into people who need them and they are willing to pay twice what it cost me. So I sell them because I'm not using them. Then fall comes and I need more freezer space. Oh well.

I'd personally keep the tire, but if you can get a good price for it, it wouldn't hurt to sell it and put the money toward something you need/like even more.

Good luck.

I am using Spikes I bought 10 years ago at 30 bucks for a 50 pound box.Current price is 1.69 to 3.99 a pound.Thats way better than 1/2% banks pay on savings.I got tired of picking thru cans of mixed nuts and bolt.Put in a good supply of common stuff so dont need to make a 60 mile trip when I need something.I keep a few 2x4 and 2x6 in the barn loft.Lumber has moved from 35 cents a bord foot to 60 cents. when my stainless welding rod got low I bought 40 pounds at 3 bucks a pound.Mower guards are 7 bucks each now.I have some I paid 3 bucks for.Knife sections and rivets are on hand that cost far less.It pays to keep stuff on hand.22 ammo that cost 50 cents abox now cost 2.00.Primers I bought for handloading at 11 bucks a thousand now cost 35 bucks, for while last year you couldnt buy any.Bar oil is 7.69 a gallon now I have 10 gallons I bought for 2.38 a few years ago.I have 1 can of paint thinner that cost 2 bucks a few years ago.Saw some at 12 bucks yesterday. So you can save money buying common items,They will get used.Call it hoarding if you want but you will make money doing it.

I keep 600 16 inner tubes on hand.My tractor, hay rake and log hauler use them. When a friend needed one the dealer had to order it and it had a goofy brass stem that made mounting hard.I was out at the time but ordered 2 more.

I will agree with you on that, just the other day I used some of the blocks I brought home from work that would have been tossed, I would have to buy them if I hadnt brought them home. On a lot of jobs when the job is done stuff left over was not taken away, and alot of time I would ask and bring it home, I have used much of that stuff doing repairs around the farm buildings. Also some of the crates that different things are packaged in is good lumber and I have done repairs with some of that too.
