The Power Steering Debacle PT II

So, I called Jacks today about my power steering hose for my Massey 135. AGCO had given me/them an estimate time of it coming in at 01 Nov. Now they are projecting it wont come in till 01 Jan 2011!!!!

I made the original purchase on 12 Sept 10. Please someone tell me that this is a load of malarky?!

Also does anyone know of a shop in Columbus, OH that can make a power steering hose that has steel/hydraulic line in it?

Thanks

Christos

Look in the yellow pages for "hydraulic equipment and supplies"- should be several.

Hydraulic (and power steering) hoses are kind of like clutches- just different combinations of "off the shelf" parts, that they then put together. When I had a clutch and pressure plate from an Oliver 550 tractor repaired at a commercial clutch outfit, I was intrigued by the fact that they didn't even ask what it was off of. He just laughed and said "that would just confuse us- we just replace all the wear parts with identical pieces, and its done." I suspect you can get a new hose made, that's identical and less money than the one AGCO will probably never send you anyhow.

I have a hunch I will be visiting the CAT dealer this week. I'm pretty angry that it would take them almost four months to make a hose.

I've called around where people have recommended I go, but no one seems able to bend steel line or know where I can go to have it done.

By chance, do you have the MF/AGCO part #? I've ordered a couple different MF power steering lines in the past year. (1 for a 150 gasser, another for a 165 diesel...different than your 135) Both were in my hands in 3 days. I'd suspect the DEALER rather than AGCO/MF parts in this case.

Look in the yellow pages of the phone directory. Any good hydraulic supply house can make a hose for you in 15 minutes. Most tractor dealerships should be able to do that too. And it will most likely be cheaper!

MFPoor,

What happened was when AGCO went to ship, they discovered what they had in the bin was defective. I dont know how they were able to tell, but a dealer 70 miles away had it over the summer. I just couldnt afford to get it at the time. Plus Jack's gave me a $10 break for it off of what it would have cost me at the dealer.

Plus there is the nagging question if the hose was bad at AGCO, how do I know the one at the dealer wasn't?

Christos, check with your local truck or hydrolic supply company. bring the old hoses in so they can match the fittings and lengths and you can walk out with new one"s in about 15 minutes depending on how busy they are. Should be less expensive than AGCO prices also.

Our local NAPA store makes hoses, fittings are a little long but generally work. Somewhere in town there is someone that make them up and in Columbus, Oh I'll bet there is someone with the "right" length fittings.

Is the steel part of the old hose still good? I had one on a 350 IH that was bad. I had a hose made and brazed a fitting on the steel part and connected it to my new hose I had made up.

Power steering hoses are usually different from standard hydraulic hoses and the fittings are usually different as well. A good hyd. hose place may be able to save your old fittings and put new hose on them. A good shop will also bend and flare tubing. A Cat dealer may do it but it will be pricey. Dave

The reason I asked if you have a Massey part #, my local dealer has quite a few old NOS parts that were brought in from a couple other dealers that shut down. He's got truck loads of 135 parts.

Our local MFA (Missouri Farmers Association) same as a Co-op in a lot of places, makes them up at each local store
