Tony, Wain-Roy was made in Fitchburg/Hubbardston,
Mass. They used leftover Ford truck front ends
and banjo rear ends. They went with 172 gas or
diesel engines, diesel was hard to start in cold
weather. They made a very good machine compared
to others in the market(JD,IH,Ford,AC,etc). W-R
had 4 wheel brakes, Funk Rev-o-matic drive, full
hydro swings, dual control, orbitrol power steer
and swing around steering and seat. Most other backhoes were mildly beefed up farm tractors.
Wain-Roy sold out the backhoe div. to Yale
and continued to build buckets, rippers and other
backhoe implements. W-R is now part of Woods Mfg.
