Can the distributor primary wire (from coil to dist.) be regular 14 gauge wire or is there something special about primary wires? The original is toast.

It could be baling wire as long as it doesn't touch anything. Use any wire temporarily but be sure to go back and replace it with a good stranded (for vibration) oil and gas resistant wire with corrosion resistant terminals. I have seen romex used in a pinch.

I suggest you use # 12 gauge Stranded wire with "Quality" wire stakeons at each end and the wire insulation should rated fpo 90 degrees C. Automotive / farm store usually have short rolls of jacketed automotive wire which will last and withstand the temperature and petroleum around engines.
