Didn't get home till just now (10:30 PM). Thanks for you who replied to the ISX post I made this morn. I just couldn't see how any type of aluminum cylinder liner could hold up in a big diesel. The distortion in an aluminum liner would be something terrible, I would think. I didn't know there was such a thing as a hybrid aluminum/steel piston so I got an education. Thanks again. Jim

The 855 Cummins from the 70's and 80's had aluminum pistons. 250 hp thru 400 hp. Its amazing that they would hold up to 500,000 hiway miles and many times more.

I put in 40 years at Cummins in Indiana including 9 years working with the Signature 600 and ISX engine program. The pistons have a steel top with aluminum skirt. The liners have always been iron. As you said, aluminum would not hold up. We did see some block or head issues in the early engines but that engine is one of the more reliable engines running today.

Maybe the best engine manufacturer in history. congrats on a long career with them.

I just got a new truck at work a 2010 KW T-800 and it has a 2007 Cummins ISX525...WOW what a good engine. I have pulled loads that gross 120K and that thing pulls like a champ. The only thing that I do have issue with is the jake works sometimes and sometimes it doesnt...havent had time to get it in the shop. 30,000 miles of hard pulling and so far this truck is awesome.
