Bumps on cows skin?

Noticed one of my cows has small bumps on her shoulders. Some type of parasite?? Been there for 3 weeks that I know of. They were treated with Ivermicten, bad spelling, that is treatment for parasites. Should I retreat them or call the vet?? The bumps are really small and can barely feel them when you run your hand on her shoulder. Thought maybe from bug bites but its been way to cold for flies and bugs the last month or more.
Any ideas??
Thanks

Ryan,

I have a small cow/calf operation (55 head) in Middle Tennessee. Obviously, I have no idea what is wrong with your cow. I think that it would be good to call a vet for a more definitive diagnosis.

I HOPE this is not the case with your cow, but I'll tell you about one of my cows who died about a month ago. She had cancer. Specifically, she had lympho sarcoma. One of the symptoms of this kind of cancer is swollen lymph nodes that are visible if you look closely. My cow aborted a calf that was about 3 months along and then just went down hill over about a one month period of time. She ran a fever of around 102 - 103 degrees. She went off feed, and lost a great deal of weight.

You would be very well served to check her temperature and notice her feeding habits before calling a vet.

Good luck. Hopefully, your cow just has some bug bites.

Is"nt there some kind of fly, or insect, that
lays eggs on the skin, and a maggot devellops
under the skin, and feeds there until time to
mature and pop out and start the cycle over ?
(I"m thinking "Bot flies", supposed to drive
elk or caribou crazy)If they get bigger have
them checked by a Vet.

I think horse flies would lay their eggs on the cattle. We use to squeeze out those warbles when they appeared under the skin. Then we step on them. Hal

That could be warble fly"s larva. The lumps are the size off a half dollar and appear on the back. Eventually they will have air hole show up and the the grubs will crawl out and pupate on the ground to become flys again.

I would advise you to google "warble fly" or "heel fly" and read about their lifecycle and treatment. I don"t believe Ivermectin works for them (It"s been twenty years or more since I had to deal with them.) There is a specal pour on but you can"t just put it on just any time becase part of the lfecycle is spent near the spinal chord and if you kill them there is some chance of having the cows go down with nerve damage. As I recall, the pour on is put on after heavy frosts.

Sounds like warbles. I used to use something called Warbex- a pour-on liquid. Pour it down the length of the top of the back. Best done when critter is wet, so it doesn't just roll off. Check your local farm store.

These are only on the shoulder areas and are smaller than a pencil and feel like a scab kinda. Spaced out about5-8"s and about 10-15 on each shoulder. Noticed them when I was petting her.

Scratch a couple off and see if there is a hole under them. Doesn't sound like there will be because it sounds like rain rot (or whatever it is called in different regions). We have a couple of horses that get it often and use this stuff:

One get's it worse than the rest and is prone to greasy heal in damp weather, I keep a pump sprayer with lime dip for her and give her a good dousing and mist the saddle pad and anything that comes in contact with her. Smelly but effective and a pint of concentrate will go a long way. Takes care of mites, ringworm, fleas, ticks, etc.

Your cow has warble fly larvae on her. We used to take an empty Pepsi bottle and put the open end over the bump. Then smack the bottom of the bottle and the warble would splat inside the bottle. Would gross my sisters out. LOL
