A local guy got killed trying to pull a stump with a Ford tractor. http://www.livingstondaily.com/

thats to bad i feel for his family.whenever i pull anything with my massys i put on the back 3-point blade with a clevis attached in one of the holes used to swing the blade might put some stress on the blade but its gonna keeper from flippin over backwards.

Mebee I"m somewhat blind, but where in the USA is Livingston? I looked all over that page and couldn"t figure out where it is. I know you don"t have anything to do with writing the article, but wouldn"t it be nice if the newspaper put their States location in there?

So what happens here. Is the chain attached high up on the tractor, like around the axle shaft. Stan

be interesting to hear where the chain was hooked to the tractor, fords have that set of holes above the axle to attach the top link, when those holes are used to pull a load the tractor will flip nearly every time, that, and their short wheelbase and relitivly light weight make them more likley to flip than some other brands, on any tractor the pull must be made from a point below the centerline of the rear axle, feel sorry for his family

Too bad. Since it is about impossible to drive off and pull a stump out, I would bet that he got a running start and tried to jerk it out. Instead, it jerked him over backwards. Seems like a close coupled draw bar that is inside of the back wheels will not work as a wheely bar.

I wouldn't necessarily call the person who died "stupid". Inexperienced maybe. What he DID was not "smart", but he probably didn't know any better. May have been the 1st time he's tried to pull a stump with a tractor, may have pulled them out before with his pickup, who knows. There are lots of times when I'm rigging something up that I haven't done before or attempting to accomplish something with the tools at hand that I stop and think about what could possibly go wrong. I can recall several instances where I said "oh,oh" and rethunk my approach.

Something similar happened to my father in 1984. He was cutting some locust trees for my aunt so she wouldn"t have to pay someone to do it. Cutting them and pulling them to the top of the hill to cut up and haul off. Something went wrong, no one saw it but my aunt heard the motor rev up and the noise when it flipped. The tractor was a MF 135 diesel. This was in Western NC so the hills were pretty steep.

Hi Traditional: ..and in America people have the Freedom to say "stupid" things about mistakes other people make. ag

My son lives in Livingston County Michigan, northast of Brighton. Nice combinatiion of city and country, but too much city for my taste.

True 'accidents' are few and far between, most machinery 'accidents' are acts of stupidity, not thinking etc.To say they're accidents means there were no human input that caused the accident.
