that dang truck again

Well some time back we got this 95 chevy 3500 and found out it had a spun bearing and in turn hit the head with the piston. Now that all are in the loop so to speak... I got a used engine and installed it and now it has a erratic idle,HARD to start, and no power I am leaning towards the gears for the injector pump may be off a tooth because if you adjust the pump it gets a little better but still not good. I may try changing to the original engine's crank sensor. but this thing is driving me nuts first 6.5 turbo I have ever dealt with. The original engine ran and started easy just had that one dead cylinder so I put the injector pump and pmd off that engine along with a remote mount for the pmd for future problem issues.(IF I CAN GET PAST THE ONES I HAVE NOW) any suggestions????

'95 is all electronic injection pump control.

Outside of all the problems that may exist you need to start by taking it to a dealership or IP shop that can set the crank offset, etc. and read the trouble codes (if any).

This is probably as far as you can get from a vehicle a shade-tree mechanic/cobbler can get running.

from what I have read you can get it close by playing with the pump location at least until it can be put on a scan tool to check the timing and I have that scheduled as soon as it can drive to the shop

Check fuel pressure at the water drain valve. The pressure should be 4 lbs. with the pump running. The lift pump fuel pressure can affect timing within the injection pump. The lift pump get the electrical power through the oil pressure switch, and these swithes do go bad.

stopped by the only mechanic in town that deals with diesel and after talking with him I am leaning towards the opti-sensor because of all the things I have already tried. I told him I want to get it running good enough to bring it to him for the final adjustments so now I need to find out how to clean the opti-sensor if nothing else just to eliminate that as a problem

The optic sensor is located in the top of the injection pump. The sensor sends an infra red signal to the computer. This sensor is your cam sensor and if this sensor fails the computer is unable to know the timing or enven adjust the timing. There is no cleaning, check for diagnostic trouble codes. First is the check engine light "ON" when the engine is running? If so shut-down the engine and with key on engine off you can check for codes. The vehicle should have the old 12 pin diagnostic connector. If so you can use a paper clip and jump terminals A and B and watch the check engine light. the codes are number of long and short flashes, and repeated three times with 12 being the first code. I will look for my 6.5 material for the wiring diagram in order to make better diagnostic. If you need to call send me your number. Hope this helps Tim
