Ground strap vs. battery cable for tractor

I have to replace the battery ground cable on my Ford 640 tractor, and was wondering if I should use a braided ground strap or a conventional battery cable? Tractor is 12v and had the braided cable until it broke in half due to corrosion. Which setup is better, or is there no difference?? Trying to get the best connection possible, cold weather will be here soon and want the tractor to start in the winter. Thanks in advance!

I would just use a battery cable and bolt it to the starter mount so as to get the best connection you can. Also use the biggest gauge cable you can find even being 12 volts bigger is better

I use braided cables on all of mine. Replaced a few reg battery cables. Easier to bend and install and some say they work better. I'm sure the other would work.

I've replaced a couple of braided ones due to breaking, but those were on busses. I like cables, not too long or short. Gerard

I had the heaviest ground cable I could find on my 6v H Farmall. The bolt broke out of the connection by the battery and I replaced it with a braided strap. Immediately, the starter spun about twice as fast as before when it had the cable.

Maybe there was something else wrong with the cable, but I'll swear by the braided strap.

Since you are dealing with DC current and not radio frequencies all that counts is the "gauge" of the wire with smaller gauge (bigger wire) being better.

I beg to differ. I've encountered insulated cables with corrosion as far as 2 inches up into the insulation. Not to say it happens every day, or even that it happens often...but it happens.

Ive got one on my truck that has corrosion under the insulation for 2 inches, the acid just moves up the cable. My tractors have no corrosion around cable because of a low 5 amp charge rate.Felt washers on the posts will help along with regular cleaning with baking soda

You need to get some of that junk off your property before property values start dropping............

Be glad to haul a couple off to help tidy the mess up a little..
