John Deere 4000 tractor

Always loved our 4000 tractor which is a diesel. The 4000 for you who dont know has the same engine as the 4020 but lighter rear end. They were only made from 1969 to 1972. This is a 1971 model.

My neighbor has a 4000 with a Powershift, which is pretty rare. He's had it since new. Pretty much just 4020 with a few "thrills" left off.

(quoted from post at 17:53:33 10/24/10) Actually the rear end is not lighter.Nor ares there 3020 parts in the final drives.
according to tractorata

Plus 4000's didn't come with battery boxes or rockshaft sheet metal and I think 3pt hitches were lighter

Lighter rear end and 3 point-no adj crank on 3 pt
uncovered batteries
one headlight per fender
no sheet metal/toolbox over 3 point
no either injector
no above-hood air cleaner
no front(belly) pto, second pto shaft not standard
no syncronizers between fwd and reverse ranges
diff lock not standard on first ones, but an option
lighter cast wheels, usually 16.9 tires, not 18.4
different tach, more like 4010 tach
Row crop 4000 weighs 7670#, 4020 weighs 8555#

Some of the above deletes could be added. I have seen a 4000 with a precleaner above the hood.

JD literature at the time explains a 4000 as a faster 3020. Pull your 3020 implements faster. A runner, not a lugger, I suppose due to lighter rear end. When tested at Nebraska, the 4000 actually had more HP than the 4020. 3020 was losing sales to the 706, and the 4000 was supposed to fix that, AND be a bit cheaper than a 4020.

Built 1969 to 1972.

I have one with 13,000 hours never had the head off (but getting tired). Still used at least 200 days a year. Owned since nearly new. A couple of clutches, many starters and alternators, maybe 3 or 4 rebuilds of injection pump, a couple of water pumps. Never into rear end or engine.

We have never had any issues with ours either, had an overhaul in the mid 1990's, it only has around 5,800 hrs on it. New in 1971 we paid 10,500 with a 5 bottom plow on it.

The "no syncronizers between fwd and reverse ranges" cannot apply to all 4000s. My neighbor has had his since new, and his 4000 is a Powershift, not SynchroRange.
