onan engines

I replaced the onan engine in my john deere 316 with a newer onan engine from a wheelhorse. My problem is the pto side of the crank is different and my pto clutch won't work. It measures 1 1/8 and the original one was 1 3/8. Has anyone encountered this problem and if so how did you resolve it?

Most wheel horses used a mechanical clutch.

What you need to do is find a friendly small engine repair shop that deals with aftermarket companies like Stens or Rotary. I am thinking their catalogs tell the pulley dia. and shaft size. You will have to find a clutch that meets both criteria.

The other option, since you say your new crank is smaller than the old one is to get a machine shop to make you an adapter sleeve that will adapt the old clutch to the new engine. Be sure they understand it has to have the keyways in it to drive the clutch.

i'm a Stens dealer and looking thru the catalog theres several 1&1/8" electric clutches available...you mite want to find a local dealer that has them in stock to match something up...word of warning...they aint cheap.

I had the exact oposite on a kohler engine for my 112.I had to turn the PTO stub down and cut a new key way.
In your case I would cut a sleeve to fill the diff.
you may have to use a step key to make up for the diff in key width between the shaft and the clutch
