I have a ford 4000, 3 cylinder, gas, 1965 model. The problem is the power steering. Since I have owned it it has leaked fluid out of the steering cylinder. Not bad just had to keep fluid in it to have power steering. The leak has not gotten worst but I have no power steering at all. So I am assuming the pump has quit working. It is the early style pump with a seperate reservoir. So my question is can it be rebuilt or do I need a new one? If I rebuild it will a rebuild kit be all I need, which looks to be just gaskets and seals. Or does it come to a point where they can not be rebuilt. Thanks, Mark

I would inspect the pump but not before
replacing the Filter in the Resevouer.
Tisco might have them or YT parts could have parts for that system. Ford/new holland tractor dealer.

I would have the cylinder resealed too!

Every time that cylinder pushes and pulls it can suck air and dirt in as well as leak.
This alone could score and plug the system.

You can buy a rebuilt and/or new pump but it is unlikely that you can cost effectively rebuild your pump as the aluminum housing wears causing excessive clearances.

You do know that there is a filter in the reservoir?

Would be nice to be able to reseal those cylinders BUT they are NOT dissambly type and cannot be rebuilt, I know because I had a 1965 and a 1968 that they both leaked.

Actually, the PS cylinder on 3 cylinder 4000 utility tractors can be resealed externally. I resealed the cylinder on a 66 4000 that I then owned about 5 years ago.

At the time the cost of the CNH reseal kit was around $80.00.

The Ford dealer said they were not rebuildable, they would not come apart, just had to keep adding fluid.

I' too have gotten lots of inaccurate information from my CNH dealer, which is one of the reasons that I do all of my own maintenance.

It is not necessary to disassemble the cylinder to reseal the shaft seal in order to prevent external leaks as the seals can be replaced externally in less than one hour.

I did this on my 66 about five years ago using a CNH seal kit costing around $80.00.
