This was in my Father's estate. My Wife thought it was cute and had to have it, so guess who is fixing it up?

It's a 1969 Subaru 360 that the bought new for I think $688. He then found out his insurance wouldn't cover it, so he stored it away in a garage on the farm. It has a total of 1300 miles on it.

How small is it?? Here it is next to my sister-in law's Mini. It's like half the size.

Neat little car!
I'm glad to see in the standard equipment list that it comes with back lights and directional signals!

Edit: Just did a little research on it. 356cc 2 stoke engine. 0-50 time of over 37 seconds.
Still, apparently very collectible and that one especially is in mint original condition from the look of it.
Thanks for sharing it.

That looks more like a bug than a bug. If it was orange with black spots lady bugs would be trying to mate with it.

Subaru 360 was a Fuji domestic Kei class car that got imported to US when Subaru was starting. Jeep dealer I worked for in early 70"s in Chicago area was also a Subaru dealer, had a couple of the little critters show up for service. The Suzuki 4x4 with 2 stroke engine- that was grandfather of current Samurai and Geo Tracker- also in area showed up couple times. The pollution laws and safety laws upgrades that hit VW Beetle got them also- couldn"t be registered for road use, couldn"t import after mid 1970s. If you had a early model grandfathered in for road use could get sneaky on tuning and get about as much power as a VW Beetle- mid 30s hp, less weight meant could win a stoplight drag race with Beetle. Kei class engine size now allowed up to 660cc, still has to be less than about 10 foot-metric equivilant- bumper to bumper. RN

Now that this thing is an antique, you should be able to get antinque plates and get it insured to drive. That is an awesome cool car!

When I was in high school there was a kid that had a car very similar looking, same size, same color, also foreign, but it ended at the windshield. The front end didn't stick out like that, and the engine was in the rear. It was a two seater, and didn't have side doors. The front end opened and swung to the drivers side to let the driver in first to slide behind the wheel, and then the passenger got in and swung the hatch closed. I have no idea who made it, but might be related. As I recall, the front tires were bigger than the back, and would have been a toad or frog if it was alive.

Enjoy that thing. No way to fit an 12V71 in it, is there?

Maybe one of these? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messerschmitt_KR200

My Aunt had a BMW Isetta when
I was about eight or nine. My Dad used to tune it up for her and then take it for a test drive through the countryside. It was the coolest car I had ever seen. He would let me sit in it when he worked on it, but was too worried that it would die somewhere on the road to let me ride in it with him.

No, but thanks. After I posted, I tried to find one, but no such luck.

That car back then had no front end at all. The front tires and fenders were like where the doors would have been if it had any, and the driver and passenger sat between them. The one front door was across the whole front like from the back of the dashboard down to their feet, except didn't have much of a dashboard.

Imagine this...an old VW Beetle shrunk to the size of this car, move the front tires to where the doors would be, and chop the front end off, but use the hood to cover the hole from the dashboard down to the floor, on hinges so it swung open to get in and out of...with a bumper below it. I guess it looked like a big egg on its side, and the bottom was the front end as well as the door to get in and out of.

Now...I gotta try some more to find that thing.

I bet that vintage Subaru would bring a real good price at the Barret Jackson auction with only 1300 miles on it. Pretty rare find. Dave

Cute little thing, but it doubles for a coffin, in an accident, 100% crumple zone, for the car that hits it! And to paraphrase click and clack, "1300 miles, it's worn out!"

worked at a gas station in 1969. boss tuned up one of those subaru"s, don"t think it was that model but was a 2 stroke 3 cylinder. he got the wires backwards and when he got done it ran fine but had 1 speed forward and 3 or 4 speeds backwards. drove him crazy for sevseral days until finally my dad got a look at it and realized what he"d done.
