Talking Big Tractors!

I understand there is/was great debate to which is the BIGGEST Tractor, The 747 Big Dud or the 1080 Versatile, Big Roy! In all fairness today they are both rather small compared to the equipment used in the Oil Sands!

There's not really any debate about it when you look at the specs. Bud has near twice the weight (near 100K # shipping weight) and 50% more power from it's 900 hp 16V71 Detroit. Big Roy was powered by a Cummins KTA-600 with 600 brake HP and had a shipping weight of a mere 54000 #... so there's really not much debate there. Bud was bigger by a long way.

Rod, correct me if I am wrong. When Big Bud was first created, I understand she was less than 600 HP. with different modifications over the years, her power was increased, whereas Big Roy is still the longest agricultural tractor with the orginal 600 HP engine!

As I understand things, BUD was around 760 HP originally and was later uprated to over 900. Bud was also a working, one off production model. Roy was only a prototype and never worked.

Big Bud was originally at 747 horsepower. I believe it was a 16v92 engine.

There was a custom built tractor in Texas built for a couple of brothers. Believe it was built in the 60's. Used a 1500 horsepower locomotive engine. Ripley's believe it or not had it listed as the most powerful agriculture tractor ever made.

The Big Bud 747 is a single tractor, there were not two of them, so what is a prototype when there is only one. I lived 1 mile from the production facility in Havre MT. I have been around several Big Bud tractors, including the 747. It is awesome. I have worked with several of the people who made the tractors, and know them.
There were many models of Big Bud tractors with various power trains and engine combos. Jim

Here are a couple pics form iowa where it was on display this summer, shows all the stats.
