paint on serial number plate

Is the number painted on? I'd write the number down and then use some paint remover to remove the paint. Then put the number back on if needed.
 
Hi rodhergott: Good question. I have a couple of Farmall tractor ID plates painted over and wondered how well those plates would stand up? Thanks for any suggestions... ag.
 
The numbers should be stamped in the plate. Try some fine steel wool. Wipe the plate gently and eventually the numbers should show up if you allow the paint to stay in the numbers. You might also remove the plate and see if they show up on the back side. If they do, you could read them with a mirror. Good luck.
 
I used the tip from THIS OLD HOUSE to boil painted hardware in a crock pot of water, with a small amount of dish detergent. I removed the paint from my tractor's data plate. It works well.
 
Gasket remover..I use "permatex" brand. Mask
off surounding are, or put some grease on it
to protect paint from overspray.
