Sound diesel sound

Some time back I drove a friend's diesel Ferguson quite a bit, but this 1972 Ford 4000 SU 3 cyl I have is the first diesel I have ever owned. His sounded a bit rattly, but mine sounds like it's about to fly in a million pieces when it is idling. Am I in trouble? How can I know how much racket it should make?

Some of the noise will depend on the type of fuel injection system it has. Direct or pre combustion. Some diesels are just noisy.

You should here some of the old detroits. Sounds like they are fixing to come apart. But they will run all day just fine.

That Ford sounded like a bucket of rocks the day it was new. It will still sound that way ten thousand hours later with minimal maintenance. The in line three cylinder motor can not be perfectly balanced so it is a little noisy.

I wouldn't worry about it much unless it's a heavy pounding while under load. 201's are noisy engines.
MIght not hurt you to check the valves tho if there's a lot of tapping...

As I said, I don't know diesels, but it sounds more like my 1965 Valiant getting ready to throw a rod, except that it gets quieter when revved and under a load.

Thanks to all. I'm thinking it's the "nature of the beast."

They're not called Screamin' Jimmys for nothing. If you don't already know that they're supposed to sound like that, anyone with any sense would shut them down IMMEDIATELY. :)
