Corn Borers

Back in the '50s, Dad would not plant corn until after May 20...that had something to do with corn borers, but I'm not sure I ever knew the reason.

Anybody on here have any ideas?

Not familiar with corn borers, but there is some thought about planting potatoes much later than everyone else along similar lines.

The first hatching of Colorado Potato Beetles hatches, feeds, lays their eggs and dies. Then the late planted potatoes emerge and are generally free from heavy beetle damage. Also another reason to plant potatoes for a fall harvest instead of as a spring crop---however there are no seed potatoes generally available.

I'm sure it is all about fooling Mother Nature's natural insect cycle whether I've posed it correctly or not.

Greenbean man is on the right track. You hold off planting so that when the corn borers hatch there is nothing for them to feed on and they die. Reduces damage to crops, at basically no cost.

greenbeanman said it... back when my grandfather was alive, he's get all antsy when my Dad would get an opportunity weather-wise to plant late april corn... he was never fond of chemicals in crops, and would always say wait til the 20th of May.. they called it "breaking the cycle" just as he posted... We'd have soybeans still green as money when frost came if we had to wait that long these days..

Thanks for the reply. Dad also had worked for the USDA back in the late '20s on some corn borer project. I'm not sure what...maybe he was involved with those "Corn Borer "D"s we hear about.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't remember any chemicals back in those days (other than fertilizer). 2-4-D came along and we did spray corn for a few years, and then 2-4-5-T came along and it was a great way to clean out fencerows.

Of course, a mixture of those two chemicals resulted in Agent Orange, but what did we know?
