Farmall H on a Thresher...

I know I've asked before: "Is an H powerful enough to run a 22" x 38" McD thresher?". I like to ask this question wherever I go. I ask again here, because of the ever changing balance of answers. The over-all response is a 60-40 split in favor of the H being a bit underpowered due to a slightly shorter piston throw. I've decided to revisit this topic due to some info I just acquired. It's a McD Threshers brochure from 1942. In the back, under specifications, it states the power required to operate the 22 x 38 thresher with wind stacker, self feeder & weigher is 20 - 30 HP. A bare-bones M & W4 are pictured below the specs. I would assume to represent the power required. Soooo.... will my H with "Fire-Crater" pistons & pushing 35 HP, be able to power my 22 x 38 thresher, even though the stroke remains the same? I'm going to toss this post around the forum a bit to see what others say.

Thanks,
Mike

Wife's grandpa used a '46 John Deere B, and then went to using a 730 Case once he bought a "big" tractor. John Deere did it for several years, but the Case worked better he said. He used a threshing machine into the late 1970's before he bought a pull type I.H. combine

The W4 has the same engine as the H, but might have slightly more power due to the increased RPMs.

The M, when introduced, had just 36 horsepower at the belt, but due to the longer stroke of the engine, has more torque.

Your H, with its current 35 HP, puts it in the range required for the thresher, but due to the shorter stroke of the H, the torque might not be sufficient to power through the BIG slugs that COULD get fed into the throat.

In short, your H most likely would power that thresher just fine, and particularly since I have never witnessed a threshing demonstration at any of the shows I've attended where they are running the thresher at full capacity anyhow.

You'll never know until you try it.

When I was about fourteen years old we had neighbor do our theshing it was a Yellow Kid with a web stacker, no blower. He ran it with a Allis Chalmers B. Had several farmers he worked for.

Are you sure the W4 has higher engine RPM than an H? There would be no purpose for that since its the same engine. Doesn"t make any sense to me.

According to the Blue Ribbon Service manual, dated 11-14-44, all tractors had a goverened maximum RPM of 1650. The U4 power units were set at 1800 RPM. I think the M, W6, etc. had different RPMs depending on application. I'd know better if I could find the durned service manual.

Yes it will run it just fine but your problem will be your belt pulley probably isnt big enough to run tyhe machine fast enough do a dry run to check the cycl speed of the thresher. It to can depend on how fast they feed the bundles but the H should be fine. Your thresher mite have a small enough pulley to make it work.
