craigslist-selling a tractor

Anyone ever had any luck selling a tractor on craigslist? I posted a diesel 3000 Ford that I've owned 14 years this weekend, no locals are replying, all emails and calls are from way off, some from several states away. And some that have offered to send me cashier checks or money orders won't call me by phone, they only respond by email, makes me very suspicous of doing business like this. Rather sell something to someone face to face, if anybody is in south Alabama or northwest Florida, I'm trying to sell my 3000 Ford for $2500 cash as I bought a 5000 Ford this weekend cause it was just too good of a deal to pass up on.

Not selling, but buying, yes. That is where I got all but one of mine. Anybody that is that far away interested in something that I would guess is somewhat run of the mill does sound fishy. Tell them cash and carry to see if they put their money where their mouth is.

I've sold lots of things, from hay to a bull dozer. What I've learned is a simple but catchy title, delete and relist weekly, and good photos. Most things sell for close to my price.

A lot more people on Craigslist are buying and selling local nowadays to keep from getting ripped off. I'm not saying those from far away are suspicious but if they are that interested, let them come with a rollback and a wad of cash.
I think trust has gone the way of the dinosaur and the Dodo bird.

I've bought and sold lots of things on craigslist. Never been stung, never stung anyone. Just went 600 miles to get an old IH truck. Took a big stack of CASH with me to buy it. All those "will send you a cashiers check, and have someone pick it up" -deals are a scam. If you feel compelled to reply to those email, just say "I accept cash only".

where are you located what mod is your tractor and can you please send me some pictures very interested thanks Les 804-561-4258

I have sold a lot of things on CLs.I strictly say no e-mails,phone calls only. That has worked pretty good for me.Hardly no e-mails and most calls were ligit.

Good Luck

Stan

Haven't sold, but bought a plow and should have bought a grain drill. I check the "free stuff" frequently looking for pallets to stack wood on. I wish more people would list their phone. For some reason, I can't get the e-mail reply to work.

Try hiding your email completely.
I buy and sell on craigslist frequently and am just not interested in fielding a bunch of dumb email replys for web site developement, scams, personal ads, etc.
Just click the box that says hide.

When I list something, I put plain in the listing for interested ones to e-mail me with their phone number and I will call them. Several times within 1 hour, I get an e-mail with no subject matter. I will immediately delete it without opening it. If subject line is correct, I will open it. If no phone number, another delete. With a phone number, you can do a reverse look-up and see at least where they are from.

I also put in the listing at least 2 times "cash only, no checks." I trust people too much at times. But as my money says, "In God We Trust." All others pay cash. So far, I have not been ripped off.

I use craigs list - ebay - YT to buy and sell with no problems. I will except bank checks or money orders but nothing leaves my property till my bank verifies it is good and totaly clear. "BUT" I prefer cash. I WILL NOT SELL OUT OF THE USA. As for distance I have found buying or selling sometimes you just can't find what as buyer wants close to area. I live in Ohio and sold more tractors out of state then in ohio and as far away as Mississippi. I know one gentleman that lives in MI. and bought a tractor from Mississippi and paid me to go get it, buyer and seller never met. I have bought tractors myself and went a long way to get them. Also bought one, had it hauled to me and never met the seller, paid for by check. I always give my name, phone number, email address, and home address so that buyer or seller is comfortable with me and knows I'm not trying to pull anything. BUT BUT BUT I want the same from who I'm dealing with and I don't give NOTHING out if it even smells a little fishy. As a buyer or seller I move with caution but I don't get all paranoid, if the deal is on the up and up people will give info.

as craigs lists says...

only deal face to face... all offers to ship are fraudulent.

I have bought and sold lots off of craigslist. I have also recieve a lot of bogus offers as well. So.. if you show up and offer cash, it seems to work very well. All the offers to send me a bank check and arrange for shipping are fake. I also see lots of items for sale where the owner is in iraq or somewhere else that are always bogus.

BEWARE OF GOOD DEALS. THEY ARE ALWAYS WRONG

I've sold lots of things on CL so far. I would say at least a third of those things went at least 1 or 2 states away. Have bought from as far away as alaska. You can do a search and it will pull item you want from all over country. I have bought several things at least 1000 miles away and had shipped. Works for me

Even face to face can be a problem. . .

Wanted a little aluminum boat (10') to take son and grandson fishing last spring. Craiglist was exasperating- emails wouldn't go through, or weren't answered, etc. The ones with phone #s seemed to work OK.

Called a guy and arranged to go see a boat about 80 miles away- got there, was looking at boat, and the cops showed up. They said the owner had seen it on Craiglist and claimed it was stolen. The guy said he had been given the boat in return for helping someone move, etc., etc. Cops told me I might as well run along, as I wouldn't be buying a boat that day.

Did find one later, took son and grandson out opening day of trout season, and Sheriff's patrol gave us a ticket (warning) for too many people in the boat. Seems a 10 foot square-front pram is only good for 2. Back to the drawing board, I guess.

I've had some good responses about my tractor on craigslist and several phone calls about it but the reason I started this topic was because there are some replys that look bogus such as wanting my home address so they could send me a certified check and then they would have their shipper come pick the tractor up, have not replied to any of those suspicious emails and also some of those emails are worded so that it doesnt look like an American sent them to me.

"You can do a search and it will pull item you want from all over country."
Curious, how do you do this?

Hey grayrider,

I saw your ad from down here in Santa Rosa county. I just bought a 3600 for my brother in Mississippi...still doing some work on it. If things don"t work out on this one, I was planning to come take a look at yours. Hopefully either way though you"ll sell it locally. I get tired of the scammers trying to play their games online whenever someone offers a legitimate sale....beware of those!!

ONE weekend, and you're ready to throw in the towel on craigslist???

That's ridiculous. If you want to sell something you need to be willing to put up with some crap.

90% are just "tire kickers." They don't have the money or any intention of buying. You gotta deal with them because you never know who's a tire kicker, and who's really serious.

You're a grown-up; you know when something doesn't smell right, and you know what to do when something doesn't smell right. If you fall for one of those cashier's check scams, you only have yourself to blame.

Think to yourself: Why would ANYONE want to buy a Ford 3000 sight unseen? It's not collectible. It's a chore tractor. You can buy a suitable chore tractor practically anywhere.

If someone wants to drive 1000 miles to see it, what difference does it make to you? Tell him to bring CASH and a trailer.

If you're uncomfortable, arrange for backup. Someone licensed to carry concealed, and ready to use it, is ideal. A buddy with a loaded shotgun, within earshot, is not a bad alternative.

Post a picture on your add and specify payment. Some goober will show up with a trailer then cry when you won't let him load it before paying for it.

I've sold several things through CL, no issues except one somehow attracted several spam emails.

I've bought a few things to, and I take the appropriate precautions when dealing with people I don't know that know I am carrying a fair amount of cash.

They are bogus.... that simple.

Have you listed here? Where is it located?

ALSO, if you're in the mid-west try Auto-rv .c om.

They get a TON of traffic and aren't too high and you usually sell stuff if reasonable.

Tractor will be sold tonight to a hunting club member of mine, he has seen it run and work for the last 4 years and knows he is getting a darn good tractor for $2500, still having weirdos contacting me by email that are apparently scammers through the craigslist site. Ya'll beware of those kinds of crooks.

I"ve done neither but about a year ago somone tried to sell a TransAm on CL in SW Ohio and was met by some hombres who shot him in a parking lot and stole his car. My thought would be you pick the meeting place and have lots of backup and well lighted or daylight hours.

Nothing is selling right now,no extra money out there.Just bargain hunters looking for someone to take advantage of.

I also hide emails and only put phone number in ad.

This seems to of stopped all the scammers.

Provide your phone number in your listing.

Hide your email address.

State when you will be returning phone calls.

State that you will call only if the item(s) for sale is/are still available.

State your selling terms at least 3 times.
State your selling terms at least 3 times.
State your selling terms at least 3 times.

Examples:

CASH ONLY, CASH ONLY, CASH ONLY

NO CHECKS, NO CHECKS, NO CHECKS

NO DELIVERY, NO DELIVERY, NO DELIVERY

NO LAY-AWAY, NO LAY-AWAY, NO LAY-AWAY

CREDIT TERMS: 50% Down on arrival and the other 50% in CASH

Hope this helps.

My 3000 is sold, have deleted my craiglist posts, will take everyone's advice and hide my email address if I ever decide to post something on there again. May be planning on selling 2 more relics real soon and will try the YT site.

Paranoia is the worst enemy of buyers and sellers on ebay and others in the States

I get so aggravated with people that say they won't ship international. Explain to them that my address is in NY and some are just ate up with ignorance " ain't no address in the US that has APO AE" Yadda yadda.
And the phone call only thing is pretty backward also, some folks have a life and job that brings them home late and don't leave much time for haggling on the telephone.
Whatever works for you though.

I'm a contractor and I use written contracts for every job I do. I get written estimates from every supplier or sub contractor I use. Its good to get things in writing. Doing so prevents allot of problems. Its just good business. When using CL I like for my first contact to be email, and for the seller to reply with answers to my questions via email. That way I can print out the email and take it along with me when I look at the item....and the item better be as described! That way the seller can't say he told you something he actually hasn't. When I email a seller with several questions about an item, and the reply with their phone number without answering my questions I get suspicious of them. I figure if they can't take two minutes to answer a couple of questions they must have something to hide. Answering an email doesn't take any longer than answering a phone call, plus it can be done at your convenience.
Its easy to weed out the spam and scam emails from the legitimate ones. Don't be afraid to sell to someone a long distance away. Include good detailed pictures of what you're selling. Include all the info you can in your description. If you were a buyer you'd want to see that info up front so why not include it if you're selling? NEVER accept anything but cash....and have one of those pens handy to check the money!

I don't answer many questions through email,it's easier to talk person to person. Most email
questions just waste your time, you'll never hear from them again.I've had people send me 20 detailed quetions,i just delete them.
