use for steel pipe

Helped a buddy scrap a NH haybine, he kept the rollers as spares, everything else was hauled off for scrap, except the axle. I couldn't see scrapping a piece of steel that big. Its roughly 4in tubing just under 12ft long.

Anyone have ideas for a good use, its just sitting on the steel pile right now. I need to torch off the trailing arms. Only thing that comes to mind right now is a nice gate post.

How thick are the walls of the pipe? I am looking for the right piece of tubing to make a black powder cannon. I want one that has a bore that a pepsi can will fit down.

A wide axle with a tongue on it makes quick work of moving small sheds.

In other words sell it to someone needing to move a shed or ????

A local fellow around here used to get $75 per shed for moving them with extra mileage over certain distance--perhaps 5 miles. That was back in the late 1980s so perhaps $100 today. There are a lot of sheds that need moved if you are willing.
 
By all means keep it. It might lay around for a few years but some day you'll find a use for it. A pipe like that is too good to throw away.

I kept the round pipe axle from a Gehl chopper that I cut up. It was an extendable axle, with one heavy pipe sliding inside the other and double 5/8" holes drilled through the outer pipe every two inches and threaded holes in the smaller pipe to match them. I must have had it on the steel rack ten years, and this summer it became the vertical post for a gooseneck trailer hitch. I welded the ball receiver in the bottom of it, and I had a hitch that was adjustable to different height pickup beds. Jim

I think it was 4in OD, 3.5in ID. .250in wall seems a little thin to me to be loading with black powder, unless you are looking for the bang, versus trying to send a projectile a mile or so.
If I remember I"ll measure it next time I"m out there.
