Hydraulic Question

Hello,

I have no knowledge of hydraulics other than push the lever this way and the bucket goes that way. I have a Gresen 2712 on my John deere to operate my loader. The up and down valve operate okay it is the valve that operates the bucket that is causing a problem. It will not hold the bucket up, it will raise it then when I release it it lowers by itself. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Jim

Two things, either the valve is not holding or the oil is leaking by the cylinder piston. My vote would be for the cylinder. Valves are pretty fool-proof

What I was always told to check the valve was to switch remotes and see what happens.

I don't know if that's feasible in your case however, as I'm not familiar with the setup.. My loader just plugs into my rear remotes.

I would say do both cylinders, but it's your money and your call.. I work on a tight budget myself, and I do some things to "get by".. But NOTHING irritates me more than stuff that don't work properly.. so usually as quick as I can get enough stashed away to fix things correctly, I do just that.

Maybe one of the valves is a motor spool which has no hold, but instead the center position is float. Switch hoses and see if the problem switches to the other function. If so, it is the valve. If not, it is the cylinders.

On certain valves, a worn or broken o-ring will cause this too. Should be on the end of the spool away from the handle.

(quoted from post at 22:06:35 10/10/10) So that means a rebuild of the cylinder? There are two, are they both leaking? Thanks

You could isolate each cylinder by dis-connecting hose from dumping end of each cyl(1@ a time) on bucket and capping hose to check for settling(movement) of bucket.

A trick that I have used many times is to hold the system against pressure on the suspected leaky circuit and after a time the cylinder that is leaking through will get warm as the oil from the tractor flows through the leak. On tandem cylinders you can easily pick out the bad cylinder without disassembling. I have isolated more steering cylinder and loader lift and dump cylinder internal leaks on Case Backhoes than I care to remember useing that method. Try it, I've used that method for 40 something years now. mEl

Valves seldom go bad. but are often blamed.
your problem is probably internal leakage of
one or more cylinders. replacing main piston seals will probably fix it.
