Browing aux transmissions are they efficent?

Have been thinking of adding older browing aux transmission for economy. Some think extra gears will overide effiecency others think will benefient. Whats your opinion?? I have a direct , under ,and over , which came from older ton and one half. this is the one I an thinking on. I do know the other one I have which is direct , under , and really under at 2 to 1 reduction. When I used to pull equipment and fifth wheel camper over wolf creek pass the 2 to 1 was great, both up and
down the pass. I have though of putting the deep reduction one in backwards. Your opinions please Bill

I think your right but on a calm day east fron denver to st louis (downhill basicaly) wouldn't it be fun to have 40 mpg just once!!! What's your opinion on effiency of more gears verses higher ratio???

I don't think I would be looking at doing that unless I currently had 4.11 or something low like that in the rear.

It all depends on the task at hand.

Just rolling down the road in a light duty vehicle, higher gear ratios will be just the ticket. However, hang a gooseneck on the back with a heavy load and more "options/gearing" is nice/needed.

All the while tho, the end game is the ratio of the rubber on the road vs the engine horsepower/speed.

And, as you already know, there always comes a 'saturation point' with any given setup.

Just 'taint a free lunch (unless of course, yer always coasting downhill). :>)

If you could engage for times when you are doing a downhill stretch or have a tailwind, and disengage it for times when you are pulling hard or going uphill or have a tailwind, I'm sure you'd see some gain. You'd likely have to do a lot of experimentation and there are sure to be a lot of variables which affect the outcome.
I always liked the little car I had years ago with a 5 speed manual, I controlled the shift RPM and with that 5th gear (which I believe was an overdrive) the fuel economy was excellent.

you guys are correct I think I will try to sell the one with direct under and deep under to some one who moves a backhoe or small dozer occasionaly with heavy pickup. That one sure made life nice when it was in ford 3/4 ton with 460 pulling wolf creek. by the way pagsoga springs is many miles west of the bottom of wolf creek and there is no feed store there.

as we are both setting around on computer this am I would ask do you also play the banjo? I need to get rid of one as need to thin out a lot of thing before I 69 dozes the house for one of the lanes. John T (the country lawyer) almost bought it, but I couldn't shake him loose from his cash for gas befors his last long trip. LOL

No Sir,

Sure don't, but would entertain the notion of any American pre-1998 Fender that ya might have lying about. :>)

Many many years ago I drove a White Freightliner
with a 318 detroit with 5 speed trans and 3 speed
tandem rear ends. Trans went south, couldn't find
another 5 speed. 10 speed road ranger was same
housing and installed that. Wound up with techinally 30 forward gears. A lot of gears overlapped. I was young back then and it was a lot of fun to drive.

Had several of the umder, direct, over in heavy trucks in early 50/60s and really made life easy when you got loaded off road or when you got empty down hill..you mentioned installing one backwards,,don,t think thing would work on the internal oli flow, some of the slingers might force oil the wrong way..Problem in smaller (one ton,s) is do you make up enough for the added weight.

I have always wanted to learn to play the Banjo . Not sure if I 'll ever have time . I have no clue about them, but thought if I had one sitting there staring at me ,,I 'd be inclined to learn how to play it , lol .

My '78 Ford F-600 utility body truck has a gimpy 330 V-8 gas engine in it..Was a City of Cleveland flatbed..4 spd, 6:88 gears..Not much for the "big roads".. I installed a 5 speed trans, a Spicer aux trans and 10:00-22 rubber..Will run out at about 65 mph without tossing hot iron out the bottom..Couldn't find a suitable rear end for it at the time..On hills I need to shift the Spicer aux trans.. On flat roads , I leave it in OD..I had to put the aux. trans linkages on the right of the main box due to clearance problems.. Not real handy to split shifts with..
