I have an opportunity to get a JD 40S 55' model but don't know what to pay. It was running when parked 5-6 years ago when hydraulics 'went out' (?) It needs a new rear wheel and needs new rubber all around. Probably can start it with new battery and crossed fingers... its not stuck. Will be a total tear-down project which will not be cheap but... buyer and seller open to opinions on value, want to be fair both ways. any ideas?

You can buy good ones for 3500.Sounds like a parts tractor. If it needs hydraulics, tires, rims,
you'll probably have more than it's worth even if it's free.

Buy it as cheap as you can, maybe $750.00. Put $1500.00 in it. It'll be worth 4 to 5 thousand if it's a show tractor depending on where you are.

Sounds like a $500 parts tractor to me. Perfect sheet metal would add a bit. You're looking at several grand for a complete restoration as you suggest. That's fine if it's a keeper but you'll probably spend more than it will be worth. I woulden't plan on making any money on it.

I have no argument with other comments. I'll add:

options would be valuable - lights, tach, weights, top link, shutters

is it original - alternator vs generator

is it complete - battery door, drawbar

is it rare - unless it's an all fuel, it's not

There were about 11,000 40S tractors built between 1953 and 1955. So not that rare, but a little unique. Kind of depends on your location as well. Lots of them around in the south but not too many in the midwest. That was why I wanted to get one.

I put used tires on mine for $240.00. The engine needed rebuilt and that was another $1400.00. I will have more in mine than it is probably worth, but I don't buy them to sell. I don't have any current pictures since mine is still waiting for the engine to be put back in the tractor.

The other poster talked about different options that might add to the price, but I would not get in to the tractor for much over a $1,000.
