Chevy Colorado

I'm starting to look for a new (used) truck. Does anyone have any experience with the Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon? I'm not looking for a 4X4, so the whole complicated front end stuff with those trucks should not be an issue. How dependable and powerful are the engines (both the 4 cyl and the 5 cyl)? How difficult are they to service? I don't need a heavy duty work truck, but I'm awfully fond of my old full sized pickup.
Good Luck and God Bless

I have a 2007 colorado with Z71 package. Highway i get a little better than 25 mpg with the 5 cylinder. Oil changes are a breeze. Ride is nice. No complaints except the bed is small and i"m glad i kept my full size for hauling. Seats 4 comfortably but don"t stick the 6 footers in the back.

No personal experience with them, but a guy I know who drives one as his work vehicle (salesman for NH dealer) does NOT like it. 2wd, auto, don't know what engine.

my bil has a '05 Colorado with the double cab and 5 cyl...he hauled a U Haul trailer from Vegas to Austin with it with quite a bit of household crap in it...other than a couple blown tires it did ok...he said hiway mileage pretty good but around town he got better mileage with his Silverado...box on truck is pretty much useless unless all you haul is ice chests.

my neighbor has a colorado, close to 200k on the odometer, no problems with the truck, he is real happy with it. if you look at a dodge dakota (used) check the radiator support below the radiator. we have seen several come thru our shop where the bottom was rusted thru and that is what holds the rad and a/c condenser in. its a weld in panel and spendy to replace.

stay away from dodge dakota
got a 04, 4.7 litre 4 x 4
decent enough truck as far as repairs
rides like a stagecoach & fuel mileage will make you puke
bob

Not picking on Chevy in particular, but I never could figure out why a manufacturer would build a huge four door pickup with a dinky little box that won't haul as much as the trunk of my car.

I own a pickup to haul stuff, and I refuse to buy one that I can't throw a 4X8 sheet of something or other in the box and slam the tailgate.

BTW, many years ago, I owned a '57 Mercury. You could slide a 4X8 sheet of plywood in the trunk and have about 6 inches sticking out. Some of our current pickups won't come close to that.

(quoted from post at 17:44:06 10/07/10) Never herd of a 5 cyl. engine Is it inline or round like the 3 cyl.

Inline 5.

I have an 08 for a company work truck. I would never buy one for myself. Not enough difference in the mileage to offset the lack of cab and cargo room. My $.03.

I drive a 08 company owned Clorado2wd auto with the 5cyl. I am totally impressed with it. It's road manors are increditable. The engine has all kinds of low end torque and the trans, stays locked up in OD allowing it to prove it's self, which is extreamly benificial in the winter when when spinning tires get you nowhere. I can let up, the tranny stays locked up and it pulls the hills. On the other hand we also personally own a Ford Ranger that my wife drives. No Room in the cab, No torque from the V6 and a tranny that doesn't know what gear it want's to be in. It won't get out of it's own way in the winter with good snow tires and weight in the back. I am still running original General tires, and depending on what winter brings, I may get around on them yet this winter. At a recent tractor show that got rained out on Sunday, I watched Silverado 4WD trucks and F150s chaw and pawing to get out of the field we were parked in. I got in my Colarado and just held a light throttle and made my way out. No rouster tails and mud flying everywhere. Buy It You Will Like It!

Brother-in-law has a 2009 Colorado. Says it is an Isuzu. He's happy with it. Nice smooth ride.

I bought one the first year they where out. I wanted the bigger cab they had over the S-10 they replaced. I liked the room and it drove nice. The fuel mileage was terrible. 5 cylinder 5 speed. It never got more than 19mpg. I sold it and found a S-10 extended cab with a 4.3 V6 5sp. Running around town I get 16-19 and out on the highway I get in the upper twenties. I keep my eyes peeled for any of the 4.3 V6 I can find. I have three right now. My kids drive two to school and college. I think Chev went back wards when they dropped the 4.3 V6 vortex motor. They also should never have dropped the 2.5 4 cylinder. That was twice the motor this new 5 cylinder is.

i've got an 07 Isuzu 4dr ext cab 5sp. 4cyl. gets close to 24mpg. I've got it for sale as i need a 4wh. 50k and nice.

GM builds them because people want them. Just like how people want the big extrended cab 3/4 tons with short beds on them.

I read that chevy is going to drop the Colorado but does not give a reason. A friend of mine has one and there is a recall on the camshaft and lifters. His cam already wore out and was repaired under warranty. I would stay away from it.
