Drilling Wheat with the Old 500

It was scheduled to be a beautiful day Saturday, so while my brother had the newer tractor with the JD 750 drill, I got the old 500 and the JD 8350 out to drill about 20 acres that we had a small plow day on. What a great time! Absolutely beautiful fall day. No wind, and about 72 degrees F. Ended up drilling about 26 acres and didn't even use a 1/3 of a tank of fuel. It's great fun when you are lucky enough to do this kind of stuff a little at a time, instead of trying to make your living with the old eqt.

By the way, I had forgotten the camera and took the pics with my phone. Sorry for the poor quality. Bob

The photos aren't that bad.

It is fun drilling wheat, but I have to laugh whenever I think of a bachelor uncle of mine. He was drilling wheat once, and was having a high old time going around the field. All at once it dawned on him he hadn't checked the seed in the drill for a while. He checked, and it was completely empty. He had no idea where he'd run out of seed.

He simply said, "He11 with it", and went home.

A week or so later when the wheat started to come up and he could see where he'd run out of seed, he went out and finished.

I had cleared some land, and at the suggestion of a wise old neighbor, had purchased 3 identical 2 bottom JD tagalong plows, so when I broke one on a root, I could just hook up another, and swap parts out as needed.

Had a more modern tractor, but just for fun on a nice spring day, hooked up an Oliver 880, and ran in a higher gear so I could be at a low enough RPM that it was even less bothersome than usual with that smooth 6 cylinder diesel. I could hear the plow slicing through the dirt, turning it over perfectly, and just remember sitting back and wondering what the poor people were doing that day.

My Dad hired his uncle one time when Dad was first starting out farming. Uncle Othel was pretty bad to drink - and after a while Dad went to check on him.

He said "Othel - this wheat drill is empty!!"... Uncle Othel just said "yeah, but I just lack this little corner and I'll be done..."...
