this is a little out of the tractor area but I would like to pick you all"s brains-- I am trying to grow barley-- the 1st year it came up pretty good now it does not seem to be germanating-- what am I doing wrong et. can it be planted in the same plot-- what does the PH need to be-- or am I doing something else wrong-- how deep to plant etc. thanks for all your help you too john blw

Barley's usually pretty foolproof (at least around here).

Have you dug in the seeded rows to see if the seed is laying in dry dirt and not sprouting or possibly seeded so deep it doesn't have enough energy for the seedlings to reach the surface?

Did you buy seed that was tested for germination or do a germination test before seeding?

I worked for 20 years for an ag university growing wheat and barley plots. Barley will not grow at low ph. Talk to your extension agent about varieties suited to your area. Get a soil test. If ryegrass is in the field or your seed, you will have to spray. We have made 60 to 130 bushel yields in SC in good years. Where are you located?

I will check the PH that might me the prob. I guess adding lime would be enough???? also answer to bob it is very dry where I am trying to grow the barley-- maybe that is part of the prob too-- although it came up the 1st year in the same plot-- thanks for the answers any other ideas greatly appreciated blw
