ford jubilee

talking to a man about his jubilee he has for sale. he says every so often he has to add hydraulic fluid, be cause the lift stops working.. he thinks he sees the leak coming from one end of an axle..question.. does the rearend and the hydraulics share the same fluid..what would be the fix. thanks for any help..

Rear End and Hyd on a Jub are seperate sumps. 80/90 in rear end and Universal Trans/Hyd oil in Hyd.
8N and before were common sumps.

A Jubilee has 3 places for oil other then engine oil. Tranny hyds and rear end all are by them self's and the tranny and rear end use the 80W-90 oil or 85W-140 and the hyds use hyd fluid. A leak like that could be in many places and could be an easy fix or a hard fix all depends on where the leak is but it is not from the rear end area

Wrong. The 8N was the last of the ford that used one area for all 3 but in 1953 the Jubilee came out and use 3 places for oil the tranny hyds and rear end where all on there own oil and took 3 places to drain and fill

Intended use: Going down to the mailbox to get the mail. Oh, and bush-hogging on steep slopes and near ponds and fences.

He already is aware that you should have the loader up in the air in such situations, to increase visibility for the operator.

And if a tire goes flat you should prop the tractor up on cinder blocks while the tire gets fixed.

But the hyd. oil -could- be leaking past the internal shaft seals, into the differential sump, then leaking out the axle seal.

Yes but if that is so he has been over filling the hyds since all tree hold pretty much the same amount of oil at about the same level so ya they can mix but they would also stay about the same level and not cause that leak unless it over goes one way which would be hard to believe

thanks for the replies..i had a jubilee maybe 20 yrs ago.. never had any problem, sold it and moved to ms..i have had a few tractors over the yrs.. most were without problems.. mf, ford,jd...will use for mowing etc.. no hard work. i am not much of a mechanic. have a nice day

Rich, oil always runs up hill...LOL

Yeppers on all sumps being the same level if ya have a internal seal leak, as liquids seek their own level.

well the jubilee has its own hydraulic sump, so the fluid is getting out somehow, i would change all the fluids and see if you can determin where its going, the only other way it can get out is if the tractor is powering a hydraulic cylinder or something and it has a leak, id do some asking as to what kind of work the tractor does, then if you buy it, then fix it, or you'll be fixing a whole lot more than a bad seal

I have a Jubilee. Had my hydraulics apart more times than I want to tell you about and rebuilt the pump too. Pulled the pto to replace the seal. Found lots of dirt in both sections.

Case New Holand recommends you use all the same oil in the tranny, hyd and rear end: chn134d. If, you have a leaky seal, the same oil will get into the other section. CHN charges about $60/5 gallons. My last oil change I went to rural king and purchased a cheaper brand for fords. Normal price was about $27/5 gal. On sale it was about $21. I purchased 10 gal. Dirt gets in around your lift arms, the spring, axle, PTO and shifter. I figure cheaper oil changed more often is better. Other people will beg to differ with my opinion. I still say the cheaper oil sold today is far better than what was made 57 years ago. However, it's your nickle.

Just checking. Sometimes we get folk on here who are expecting more from a N series than what the the tractors were designed to do.

Theres a collar on the PTO shaft that can move back and make the seal worthless. This happened on my 640.I put in a new 1 3/8 to replace a worn out 1 1/8 shaft. No mention of a leaking pump seal leaking hyd oil into the crankcase.I used 90 ep oil in the differential and 134 in the hydraulic sump.No sign of mixing when I drained the 134 and replaced it with 90 GL1.Got tired of losing lift power in warm weather with the 134,noticed that the carry all stayed up all day with a full load of cornstalks. It would have dropped to the ground in a hour with 134.There was no sign of water contamination in the drained 134. too much wrong info on these forums latley.

went to see the jubilee this am...talked to owner..appearance is fair. tires are good..needs brakes on both wheels..small amount play in steering while sitting still.. owner says 3pt wont lift sometimes.. he had hydraulic pump repaired a few months back..they put a petcock on the top of the pump, so he opens the petcock and let out some air when the lift does not go up..anyone want to estimate the cost for the brakes and finding the air leak.. he is asking $900. maybe get to come down to $700. thanks

The air in the pump could be caused by many things. Some may say you have bad o-rings, a leak, scratches on the shaft causing a seal to leak. I found a one broken spring inside my pump, which was to have been rebuilt. There are 12 balls and springs that act as intake and exhaust valves. If just one of them is bad, your pump will lose it's prime and fill with air.

Take the vent plug off the hyd pump before you start it and if isn't full of oil, you lost your prime.

There seems to be many hyd issues on this sight. I tend to think the 3-pt may not have been ford's better idea. There are no hyd filters like you will find on today's tractors and 57 years of wear is adding up.

I purchased all the parts from this sight, yt, with the exception of needle bearings from FIX-a-ford for around $150. I couldn't have done the job without a mig welder and a 20 ton press. There are many than can tell you how to rebuild your pump.

Good brand name tires for your tractor will cost you more than $900. If the tractor runs, has a good clutch, motor doesn't smoke, tranny is solid, PTO works, you can't be hurt paying $900. Don't go to CNH to buy a new hyd pump.
They wanted $2600 for a new one.

You will find out that doing a total re-hab on these old tractors will cost you far more than the tractor is worth. I saw where someone was asking $10,000 for a restored Jubilee. He will never get it and he may have put that much money into it if he hired the work done.

Hope I've helped,
George
