MacFaddens auction today - central NY

I drove over to MacFaddens tractor salvage yard and auction site yesterday to preview. Nice day for it, and this way I was able to avoid the madness that I'm sure is going on there now.

I kind of like the Deere Lindeman BO crawler (behind the chain link fence). But, not enough to go over and bid on it.

I also like the wide-track Oliver/Cletrac HG sitting in the weeds . .

Mostly consignment, but you never know. Jim Macfadden always throws in some of his own stuff he wants to sell. He has his own salvage tractor yard, a new Landini tractor dealership, and is also an auctioneer for hire. Due to his Landini dealership, he brings some really neat and oddball American/European tractors over by boat. Weird diesel older Farmalls, Allis Chalmers, Massey Harris, etc. American name tractors with European engines.

His auctions are mad-houses. People come from all over the country. Thus the reason I tend to stay away on auction-day unless I really want something badly.

Last year I bought a Deere 300B backhoe/loader for $3200. Good deal, but I have no idea how it got bid to that level. The way they do their auction is very confusing (at least to me). Lots of noise, hard to tell when someone is acutally bidding, and sometimes - two auctioneers selling at the same time. I'm not new to auctions, but always have trouble at Macfaddens. Too loud, crowded, and fast-paced for me.

I think some of these auctioneers are getting out of hand. Or maybe they"ve always been that way.

I went to an auction a week ago today where they sold a deceased fellow"s collection of 25-30 Farmall tractors, plus a few other items. I bought a Howse 6", 3pt shredder. Straight and clean, no dents or welds. Except for the red paint faded it could have passed for new. I paid $600 for it, and I would have bought it off a dealer"s lot for that since TSC sells the equivalent new for $900.

BUT... At one time bidding stalled and I thought I had it bought for $350, when "someone, somewhere" way behind me in the crowd started bidding rapidly. Makes you wonder just where the bids are coming from.

I saw the same thing repeat on the tractors. Bidding would stall at a respectable, but still reasonable, price and then all at once the auctioneer would be getting rapid-fire bids from some where back in the crowd and run the price up a thousand or two more.

But, you"re still the one in control. If you don"t like the way the bidding is going, simply walk off.

went for the morning today...didn't stick around for the antiques...too much goin on at home.
overall kind of small for one of his auctions...it was empty in the morning during the small stuff portion of the sale...but it filled up later...
items of note that i can remember...
there was a guy who brought 6 large engines on crates...all running...v6 detriot diesel, large cat motor, old ford gas.., v8 detriot.all of them went for under $500...i think the v6 went more like $300...they drew a lot of attention before the sale when the guy had them cranked up.
nh 256 rake, decent shape, went for $1100
nh 253 baler (no kicker) with a terrible paint job went for around $1000, 479 haybine went around $600
pequea haywagon (floor rough, frame a little bent) went for $1400 - i ducked out at $1200)
nh 56 rake went for $600 or so
farmall super h went for around $1500
3 new 8ft heavy duty backblades went for $650 each
nice looking cat 1 3 pt hitch backhoe went for $2200
oliver super 77 that ran nice went for $1800 or so
that's about all that i remember...there were a ton of farmalls there...many more than usual...

i do believe jim to be an honest auctioneer...he is there to make money just like i am there to get a deal...i say that he is honest because i am frequently the 2nd bidder and it is usually a different guy ahead of me...
always a big crowd and always plenty of people...been happy with the items i have gotten there.
he has that auction at springfield tractor coming up next weekend...mostly small compact, lawn and garden stuff...i went to the spring version of that...what a madhouse...got a nice riding mower for the wife to mow the lawns here...haven't decided whether or not to go.

just remembered...quite a steal.
MF 50C backhoe/loader - overall good shape, only problem was a transmission issue - went for $1200
seemed cheap if you have the time/patience to fix
