OT: Had to put our black Chow to sleep

Our black Chow Taz had an ultrasound to determine why she was losing weight and vomiting back in July and they determined she had stomach cancer. Taz could open the kitchen cabinet doors with her paw and she could open the sliding glass door. She would extend her right paw to shake hands with you.

She had lost 50% of her original weight which was near 60 pounds. When they weighed her today she only weighed 30 pounds. She hasn't been eating any solid food since April. She's been very active considering her weight loss. She started passing blood on Wednesday so we decided it was time to put her to sleep. My wife seems think it was the dog food that they were recalling several years ago to cause her cancer. The other dog we have was on a different food since she was younger, but the same brand and it wasn't on the recall list.
She's had no problems so far.

We bought another Chow pup after we received the news on Taz on July 13th. She will be 5 months old in October. She and the Keeshond are always playing. So everyone is blue today.

Sorry to hear it had come to that, but better to do what you did than have her suffer. Bad enough that humans have to "let nature take its course"; we should help our pets avoid suffering.

Sorry for the loss of your dog.

Nancy always takes our animals to the vet to be put to sleep.

Never gets any easier.

Right you are. Never any need to let friends suffer just so we can have em near.In my 75 years of living, I've had many pet friends that I cherished. Could not let any of em suffer such a death. Cancer is terrible. Lost my daughter last December 8th .Morphine(sp) eases a person on to the other life. Thank God for that drug/ I want to tell ya El Toro's loss is really dis heartning.I can understand. God has a plan for his pal.

Sorry for your loss. My dog had to be to sleep in the late 80's because of cancer. He was only 8 1/2 years old and wouldn't hurt a fly. The magpie's would stand between his paws and eat his dog food. He didn't care. Always sad to lose your best buddy. Dave

I have had to put down 2 dogs in the last few years,I think the older you get the harder it gets. They leave a hole in your heart when their time comes. I hope you get another "Buddy" and love him or her as much. I am sorry for your loss

I know how you feel to loose such a good friend and will miss the antics she did to show her personal identity, and no other breed or even of the same breed will come close to being "Taz"

I lost my best friend "Buffy" a bull terrier mix, when she was hit by a car. I swore then never to have another dog as the pain was so unbearable to loose her.

SIL gave My wife a shiatsu, and we had to drive 230 mile just to see it the whole drive I said we weren't bringing it home and tried to explain how it wasn't fair to have to go through the feelings of the loss again.

Well, long story short I looked at that little bundle of wet fur in that towel , (It just had a bath) and held it up to my face it reached out its paw placed it on my nose, and growled at me
wagged his tail and playfully bit me on nose. I knew he was saying you're gonna love me. Hence the name "Bandit" he stole my heart.

Lou, I'm so sorry to hear of your daughter(for the first time in my case.) I have seen many of your posts and somehow feel like a little bit of family. It's even harder to try to understand why A parent may out live their children, but you answered it all with your last sentence.

Sorry to hear that. It is tough. We adopted two stray kittens a while back and after we had them a few weeks, they somehow got into some sort chemical, probably antifreeze. We had to put them down at a very young age.

Hal,
was just thinking today ... wondering how thing are going ...

Man sure am SORRY to hear it ...

Take care ...

Mark

My condolences on your loss; have gone thru it a few times in my 69 years.
I like both cats and dogs.....but......the only one that will give you UNCONDITIONAL love is a dog!! Very few humans will do the same!!

I want to thank all of that posted on here with your kind responses. Here's a pic of Taz when she was healthy and one of the new pup Sugarbear. We call her Sug for short and she seem to know that Taz was another Chow. She would sleep near her and stand under her and we never got a pic of that. Hal

Sorry for your loss Hal.I't hard to say goodbye to family members . we just had to put our springer down last month . My hunting buddy of 14 years . Gonna be tough opening day . We have a German shorthair , she really changed after OP was gone . Wife decided we needed to get another pup ASAP//Picked out a nice lil springer to keep her company . WOW I forgot how much work puppies are !

Be thankful it wasn't a HUMAN family member, for Pete's sakes!

Dogs are a dime a dozen compared to dealing with human tragedy!

My Border Collie died on a Sunday afternoon,Son helped me bury him.Sunday nite was bad for me,Monday morning I was on the phone looking for a pup.At noon I had a pup named Gus in the truck. We stopped for some road work when a big truck stopped behind us,Gus looked out the back window and barked at the truck.Theres no time to be sad when Gus is with me.While the loss of a pet is hard the pleasure they bring to us during their short life is wonderful.Replacing a lost pet should be done right away.Gus has a bell at the kitchen door that he rings when he wants to go out.Pups can be taught to ring a small bell hanging on a string.
