spark plugs

True story; A friend of mine's father-in law
called him and said, come over and check out my
tractor, every time i put it under a load, it
backfires and pops. My friend went over and checked everything out. He said Hank, I think it
is the plugs. His father-in-law said, I know it ain't the plugs, they have been in there 10 years and have never gave a minutes trouble!

Some years ago my cousin went to work for a guy who had a 830 Case. First thing cousin did in the morning before starting tractor was pull the dip stick. Guy asked him what he was doing that for. Cousin said to make shure the oil is up to full. Guy asked him why? where would it go?

I bought a 10 year old Lincoln several years ago- had 128,000 miles, owned by little old lady.

At abour 140K, it started missing a bit when under load. Idled fine. Took it to my mechanic. We have a deal- he doesn't screw me, and I don't make him save the parts, call for repairs over $75, etc. He did save the plugs, though, just for laughs.

Most of them had burned the entire bottom loop away- spark was just from the center to the outside where it screwed in. Only reason it started missing was that the center anode had burned down to where it was shielded from the edge by the ceramic, and the spark was having to go over the ceramic center shield. The old gal had never changed them- and the car still ran.

He is my age (early 60's), and said, "We long for the good old days, but I'd rather have plugs that last 140,000 miles rather then 20,000 like back in the day. Tires that go 60 thousand are also better than 20 thousand. And I can't remember the last time I adjusted a carburetor, except on the old junk YOU bring in. But keep bringing them in, it keeps me sharp."

Years ago, when I was still in College, I had a summer maintenance job and was put in charge of some High School students. One day I stopped by a kid who was mowing with a Lawn Boy pushmower. He had run out of gas, so I decided to help him out by mixing a gallon of gas for him. As I was measuring out the oil and pouring it in the gallon can, he asked what I was doing. I said "mixing the oil with the gas for the mower". He replied, "Don't do that, it aint use to it." Boss had to junk the mower.

Had a guy bring me a riding mower. Can't see the engine for all the dirt that is on it. Now he wants to know why it is locked up. Tried to explain that air cooled engines need air to cool not dirt.
