IH 504 Starting Problem

I have a 1968 504 Utility with a C153 engine. When I turn the key the motor turns over and starts but the minute I let go of the key the engine dies out. Can someone help me diagnose this problem? Thanks, Bill

If the tractor stops as soon as the key is let go (don't sputter and such) I'd say the ignition switch is a probable cause. My D-17 Allis did nearly the same.

Try running a jumper wire to the coil from a battery source and see what happens then. if it continues to run, I'd start with replacing the ignition switch.

Resistor on top of the coil is open. When you crank it, the resistor is bypassed and 12 volts is applied to the coil for easier starting. The engine will run as long as you hold down the start button. NOT GOOD on the starter though.

If you have a Ballast Resistor before your coil disconnect it at both ends and check with an ohm meter. Sounds like it's bad if you have one. I would also check the terminals on the back of your ign swicth. Sometimes the rivet holding the terminals on the switch become loose. This will cause the connection to become hot and melt the switch.

my uncle had the same trouble one of the wires on the ballast reistor had broken off sometimes it can be hard to spot
