Tractor Wood Splitter question

This is the first time i've used my 3 point wood splitter with my new 8260 new holland tractor, the book shows what ports to plug in the hoses and says to pull back the hydraulic lever in the cab (i have a separate valve on the splitter) When i pull back the lever, it sounds like its putting a strain on the hydraulic system until i move the handle on the splitter, will it hurt anything by doing this? I sure don't want to tear up the tractors hydraulic system but i don't know of any other way to use it, i tried float but it wouldn't move at all.

you probably have a closed system on your tractor and a closed system on your splitter,..you will need another valve for your splitter to make it an open system, open system allows fluid to flow through the splitter valve till you move a lever

I think you mean he has an open center system on the tractor and a closed center system on the splitter. There could be a plug on the splitter valve to allow it to be changed to open center. Using it the way it is now would cause the oil to get very hot very soon because the power to overcome the pressure relief valve all gets changed to heat, and that is in the oil.

Do you have a block on the side of tractor. for Hyd's. like this one on my 1715. if you do you can hook it up like this.

You need to change the valve on the splitter to an OPEN CENTER valve. Buy a new valve with a detent and sell the one you take off to someone who needs a closed center.

the tractor and the splitter valve is both closed center, i have a JD tractor that is also closed center i use the splitter with as well. i started with an open center valve but it would not work with the JD tractor, someone told me i needed a closed center valve so thats what i got. so with an open center valve on the splitter do i need to run the tractor in float mode or pull the lever back???

Here is a funny thing, i pull my lever back on my JD tractor and it doesn't get in a bind like the new holland does, i've used it all day long and never had any problems. I'll get a open center valve and try it, the new holland works so much faster than the deere i'll use it most of the time anyway.
