Delco one wire alternator

Hi guys,

I been searching in the archives, because I know this has came up before.. but can't seem to find it.

I'm wondering is there a "right" way to wire a one wire delco alternator up?

It's going onto a 560 diesel that will be used nearly daily, and this is what the owner wants, so I'm not asking many questions, just trying to help him get it all doctored up..

The only one I ever did, I just ran a wire to the battery post on the starter solenoid, and has worked fine for 3 years of little use, and don't seem to draw the battery down (sits for 11 months out of the year, starts right up when the time comes)

I also know I have to remove the old VR and some of the old wiring, but is there anything else I have to do? He has the alternator already "mocked" up, and has it ready to go, just needs wiring done to finish it up.. I just want to be sure we do it right and remove the right things, and so that the ammeter works like it should (and don't draw the battery and stuff down)

Whether or not you have enough draw through the alternator to cause to battery to be too low to start the tractor depends on the alternator, not the wiring you will be doing.

All you need to do is take the wire that runs from the ammeter to the regulator and connect it to the alternator instead of the regulator.

If your wiring is good an easy way to do it is to take all three wires at the regulator and connect them together. Two of those wires went to the generator. Just connect both of them to the alternator stud. You will have just one splice connection and no extra wires left over.
 
Connect the wire from the battery terminal post on the starter to one side of the ammeter.

Connect the charging output lead and ALL electrical loads to the other ammeter post.

If the ammeter reads backwards swap the wires between the ammeter posts.

How can you connect 2 different sets of wires to 2 different posts on a 1 wire alt that only has 1 post(attaching point)???????????

The 1 wire alt's that I've installed only had 1(one) wire attached and 1 place to attach a wire.

Please disregard my question as I read Bob's statement incorrectly as I missed the word "ampmeter"!!!!!
 
What bob said, Ive had mine wired that way with a pretty low cca 12v battery and in the dead of winter it starts up, usually one starts 5-6 times a year and ive never had my battery go down
 
Check the battery to see if its hooked NEGITIVE ground.You wont have to reverse the guage. The electric still has to flow the same way in and out.
