Humorous Horse Hay Customer

I posted a local add to sell my remaining bales and future cutting of perennial peanut hay. I had a horse lady call and ask about quality, weeds, color, etc. Here"s what I found funny: She asked if it had good green color, becuase her horses would only eat green hay, the didnt like brown hay. I"m pretty sure horses are colorblind. So who really prefers the greener hay?

The greener the hay the richer the hay. Any thing that eats hay is going to eat the green hay before the brown hay. My mom"s horse"s are picky eater"s like that.

Hi JBMac Nope.. horses are not colorblind but they see less color then humans do. What I've read is that tests are mixed depending on breed of horse but most can see shades of green.. maybe because green is the color of most of what they have to eat. Google "vision horses" and read several of the links for a background.. They do seem to most often see two colors but the big difference is in the way they focus their eyes compared to us and that may be better then we can see certain things. ag

offer a kid a hamburger or chopped liver and see which one they eat first. horses are no different. Even cows will eat the center of the round bale before they eat the outer.
